Frightfully good restaurant deals — today only!

Today (Oct. 31) Chipotle will be offering burritos, bowls, salads or an order of tacos for only $2 when you come in dressed in any farm-inspired costume after 6 p.m. The Boorito event will donate the proceeds to The Chipotle Cultivate Foundation and Farm Aid, so dress up as your favorite “farmer, crop, animal, or farm implement” if you want to participate!

TGI Fridays locations will be offering free appetizers to anyone in costume tonight. The fine print says there’s a limit of one free appetizer per person — but not per table. Click here for more information on Frightful Fridays.

Click here for a printable coupon good at O’Charley’s tonight. With it, you’ll get 20% off to-go orders tonight. This is a great deal for families rushing around before trick-or-treating!

Wal-Mart’s new price matching program begins Nov. 1

Be sure you hold on to any ads containing products you’re interested in Nov. 1 through Dec. 25, because you might be able to get some money back with the Wal-Mart Christmas Price Guarantee.

This program is offering shoppers Wal-Mart gift cards containing the price difference of a product advertised for less at another store. Now, to get the deal you’ll need to show Customer Service the ad and your Wal-Mart receipt (both dated between Nov. 1 and Dec. 25).

The product must be identical to what you’ve already purchased (the same brand, size, color, quantity, grade and model number), and be available at competitor’s stores located within the same local market as your particular Wal-Mart store.

One thing about this deal that I think is especially great: items on layaway will be eligible. A few things that aren’t so great: Black Friday and Internet deals are not eligible.

What do you think about this program? Will you be using it to save on your holiday shopping?

Redbox increases DVD rental prices

I received an email from Redbox yesterday outlining their new prices. The price for daily DVD rentals is increasing, but the price of Blu-Ray and game rentals will stay the same. Here’s what the email said:

“Starting on Monday, October 31, the daily rental charge for DVDs will change to $1.20 a day.* The price change is due to rising operating expenses, including new increases in debit card fees. Daily rental charges for Blu-ray™ Discs and video games won’t change.** Additional-day charges for DVDs rented before 10/31 won’t be affected, either.

In order to make the transition easier, Redbox will discount the first day of all online DVD rentals to $1.00 from 10/31 through 11/30. Additional rental days will be $1.20.***

If you have any questions, please visit redbox.com/pricechange. There, we’ve provided additional information. ”

*Daily rental charge will be $1.27 in Maryland.
**Maryland pricing for Blu-ray and games: $1.59 a day for Blu-ray; $2.12 a day for games.
***Maryland pricing for online reservations: $1.00 the first day, $1.27 for additional days. May not combine offers. Normal rental fees apply after first day.

This price increase isn’t entirely surprising, especially after we saw Netflix prices change so drastically a few months ago.

Will this change your rental habits?

Keep an eye out for (possibly) free gift sets at Walmart and Target

With the holiday season coming, you start seeing gift sets pop up in retailers more and more. Walmart and Target generally have tons of these filled with all kinds of goodies, but this year you could possibly snag one for free.

Here’s the deal:

An example of a Pantene set that can be found at Target.

Both retailers are marketing gift sets, Walmart with Febreze and Target with Pantene, that include magazine subscriptions. However, you can opt out of the magazine subscription in most cases with a card found inside the gift pack. Follow the directions, and send in your receipt with the card and you’ll get a rebate for cash back.

Both baskets run about $9.99. You can find the gift baskets on Target’s website, but they are sold out right now. Walmart doesn’t seem to have the baskets online.

Check your local stores for other deals like this. Don’t assume the pack will have a rebate in it, but I know for sure that these two do. It looks like the common thing these rebate-eligible baskets offer is magazine subscriptions, so if you find one promoting that then chances are you’ve found yourself a deal!

Have you found these gift sets or any similar sets locally?

*Note: Target’s website has been on the fritz for the past 2 days because of the $5 off online purchase offer, which is good through Saturday. Use the TGT75HFN to get this deal.

Want a deal? Opt to swap

While I have heard of swap parties, I only recently became truly enlightened on the beauty of swapping your trash for a friend’s treasure.

These parties are like shopping, except you spend less, get rid of those pieces taking up room in your closet and don’t have to venture to the mall — what’s not to love?

There are a lot of variations on the details of a swap party, but generally the idea is that guests bring a certain number of items and then take turns picking through the loot to find something that works for them.

One idea I like is expanding your swap parties to include things other than clothes.

Consider holding a swap party for movies (there’s only so many times you can rewatch “Titanic,” right?), books, toys, plants, jewelry, accessories and even recipes. Instead of throwing a regular potluck, have attendees bring recipe cards along with their dish, and voila, a swap party is born.

Hosting these types of parties also makes it easier for everyone to find something that works for them; it’s much less difficult when sizes aren’t involved. For clothing swaps, consider having a theme, such as all kids’ clothes or seasonal clothes.

Also, don’t forget about men’s clothing and costumes. A neighborhood full of families with kids of various ages could easily throw a Halloween swap party, leading to big savings on costumes and even decor — certain decorations can wear out their welcome in your home after years of use.

Don’t exclude men from the fun, either. Wearing ties and sport jackets every day can get monotonous, so swapping these pieces can really give their look a boost.

Here are some tips for throwing a successful swap party of your own:

 * Have a minimum and maximum number of items each person should bring. This keeps the number of items available for each person to pick from proportional to the number of guests.

* Don’t feel like everyone in attendance has to be the same size. Someone may have clothes that are now too big or too small, and even larger-sized items can be brought back in style by cinching the waste with a belt.

* Encourage attendees to bring their items a day or two early so you can organize the goods.

* Invite people who wear different styles of clothing. Even if you don’t want to dress exactly like them, having pieces of clothing that differ from what you usually buy can liven up your wardrobe. If you don’t end up wearing the pieces, you haven’t lost any money and you can just swap it again.

* Donate the leftover items. If you haven’t used a piece of clothing or an accessory, or read a book within a year, you probably won’t get around to it after the swap, either. Let these items go to people who need them more.

Do you have any swap stories to share?

Also, check out this free Cookie Swap digital cookbook from Gooseberry Patch on Amazon. (Note: Amazon prices can change at any time, so make sure the price reads $0.00 before you click to purchase!) Maybe it will inspire you to throw a swap party of your own!

10 cent sale at Dollar General

Today through Monday (Oct. 25-31) Dollar General has all of its summer clearance, which includes lawn and garden, swim and summer toys, and green dot home items, for 10 cents. Select clearance apparel is also only $1.

Buying in bulk vs. buying with coupons

Sure, you can buy a whole case of Coke at Sam's Club, but will it save you any money? Not if you clip coupons. Photo by Forbes.com.

One of my favorite blogs, Southern Savers, recently posted this great chart with a breakdown of the average cost of buying in bulk vs. buying with coupons.

Of course, some of the prices will vary, but it’s still a good eye-opener. With the popularity of coupons on the rise, many items are not the bargain that they used to be in bulk. I think it’s a major negative that you can’t use coupons at warehouse clubs. However, if you don’t want to spend the time clipping coupons these clubs are generally cheaper than the average, non-sale retail price of many products.

Check out the full chart here.

Dairy products and fresh meats are still a good deal at these clubs for coupon users, but is that worth a full year’s membership fee?

Check out the numbers and think about your shopping bill. Are you really saving money with your Sam’s Club or other warehouse club membership?

How to hunt down discontinued products

A few years ago, my favorite mascara was discontinued. While this sounds like a minor life problem, it was aggravating — and I know plenty of other women have had the same experience. You end up stockpiling the product whenever you can find it, and then squeezing every last drop out of it.

Recently I discovered the beauty of hunting down a discontinued product online. There are entire websites dedicated to discontinued products. The Vermont Country Store is a well-known catalog and website filled with discontinued toys, candies and other old-timey goods, and sites such as Amazon and eBay occasionally have discontinued gems available from private sellers. I was able to find my mascara in multiple places and stock up. OverstockCosmetics.com and BeautyEncounter.com are two reliable sites filled with hard-to-find and discontinued makeup products.

You also can find discontinued products in stores, and this can lead to serious savings. The stores are often trying to clear their shelves of these products to make way for the next big thing.

Buying discontinued isn’t for every product, though. There are pros and cons, and you should use common sense.

Here are a few common items you can find discontinued, and what you should be aware of:

Grocery products. These can fall under a few categories: the manufacturer has decided not to make the product any longer, the label is changing, the recipe is changing or it’s a seasonal item.

As long as you keep track of the expiration date, this can be a great opportunity to stock up on nonperishables, such as canned goods, and other products with long shelf lives, such as condiments, for cheap. Grocery stores often keep all of their clearance and discontinued items in one place, and you can usually combine your coupons with the discounted price, increasing the savings.

    * Electronics. Electronics are a little tricky. Buying a discontinued piece of equipment, such as a TV or computer, usually means you’re getting a great deal, but there are some risks. It may be difficult to find parts for repairs, and there may be a technical reason the product was discontinued. So always research the product before buying it.

However, if it’s just a case where a new model is coming out and you don’t care if your product is up-to-the-minute new, you’re probably getting a bargain.

Beauty products. Beauty products are also tricky. While it’s easy to get addicted to certain products, you don’t want to buy something that’s been sitting around too long.

Search for the product as soon as you know it’s discontinued so you can stock up and store it in a cool, dry place. If you’re buying it from a website, you never know how it’s been stored. Makeup has a shelf life just like food, so you don’t want to invest in something that’s no good. Also, only buy products that are still in the original, factory-sealed packaging.

Paper and plastic goods. These are the safest product to invest in. A company may be changing the design or packaging of the product, but the product itself should still be in great condition for years.

Companies such as Rubbermaid are always coming out with new styles and colors of their products and discontinuing the previous line, so finding these products on clearance in a store can lead to big savings on a brand-name product.

Do you have any tips for finding your favorite discontinued items or finding deals on other discontinued products? Share them!

    Stores revamp layaway programs

One of my first shopping memories is going to Hills Department Store in Roanoke and shopping for clothes at the end of every season — bathing suits, shorts and T-shirts at the end of summer and winter coats, jeans and sweaters at the end of winter.

My mother would dig through the clearance clothes, picking out a variety of pieces a couple of sizes too big, and place them on layaway. By the time I needed those clothes, they fit perfectly and we had paid a fraction of their original prices.

Since those days, I haven’t considered using layaway again, and the option had fallen by the wayside. With the recent economic condition, though, many stores are revitalizing their layaway programs.

For example, Walmart stores will be offering a Christmas layaway program for toys and electronics beginning Oct. 17. The program will run through Dec. 16, allowing families to pay off gifts before the holidays. To participate, customers must be placing at least $50 of merchandise on layaway, and each product must be at least $15 or more.

Though this is just one store offering the service, it provides a good example of the notable aspects of layaway. There is a $5 service fee when items are placed on layaway, and the customer must make a 10 percent down payment on the total purchase. Additionally, there will be a $10 fee for any canceled orders or those that are not picked up by Dec. 16.

Each store has a variation on these fees, but these numbers are on par with Walmart’s competitors. The service and cancellation fees are what shoppers should really look out for.

If the fees make up more than 10 percent of the value of the items, consumers might reconsider if the deal is worth it — these fees (excluding the down payment) are not put toward the total payment.

But layaway can be a great alternative to purchasing on credit. The service can help shoppers stick to a monthly budget, but still afford occasional luxury and high-dollar purchases. It also allows consumers to make purchases during the costly holiday season without threatening their credit limit.

It’s still important to have a budget when using layaway. Payments can quickly add up if too much is placed on layaway, possibly causing shoppers to spend even more on cancellation fees.

Some local stores that also offer layaway include Burlington Coat Factory, Kmart, Sears, Toys R Us, Hallmark, Marshalls and T.J. Maxx. Some Best Buy locations also offer layaway, but none in the Roanoke Valley.

    Pros and cons of layaway

    Pros

    * Layaway allows you to pay off purchases gradually without putting your credit in danger.

    * Many stores allow customers to place sale and clearance items on layaway.

*You can reserve high-demand and high-dollar items you couldn’t normally afford all at once.

    * If you carry a balance on your credit card, layaway is often cheaper than the interest you would pay on a high credit card bill.

    Cons

    * Placing items on layaway means you can’t take advantage of future price drops or sales.

    * The fees can add up quickly if you miss a payment or have to cancel your order.

    * Most stores require a minimum purchase and down payment be made on layaway items, which can still be a high out-of-pocket amount.

    * Layaway encourages shoppers to spend more than they have available at that time, so you must have a strict budget planned. so you don’t overspend

Have you used layaway successfully, or will you be trying it this holiday season?

HalloweenCostumes.com Daily Deal: $10 for $20 worth of costumes and accessories

HalloweenCostumes.com has costumes for everyone in the family -- even the dog!

If you read my column Wednesday, you’ll remember that I said to look out for daily deals for costume stores and websites.

Well, one just came through today that might interest some of you.

Eversave has a deal today that will get you $20 worth of costumes and accessories for $10 at HalloweenCostumes.com. This deal will be live for 2 more days, but you never know when it could sell out — so grab it up if you’re interested!

Also, you can buy up to 3 “saves” (what Eversave calls their deals), so this is an especially good bargain for parents that have multiple kids to outfit.

This website looks like it has some pretty nice costumes, but they’re not all outrageously expensive. Plus, there’s a flat rate shipping fee of only $4.99.

    Sweet deals for Halloween

Looking for a new twist on carving pumpkins? Check out Disney's FamilyFun.com for tons of free and cheap ideas.

Between buying costumes, bags of candy, pumpkins and decorations, the costs associated with Halloween can add up quick. Here are some money-saving ideas to help you celebrate this year:

    * Check consignment stores, thrift stores and online retailers for costumes. Generally kids only get one year’s use out of a costume, so even if you buy a used one it can be practically new.

Websites like eBay are a great place to look for costumes, and fall brings about tons of local consignment sales. The LFA Kids Consignment Event is happening in the CMT Building on Brandon Avenue in Roanoke through Sunday.

     * I’m admittedly not the best at carving pumpkins, so paper stencils are a lifesaver. Stores often stock stencil kits, which are handy if you need carving tools. However, if you have kept your tools from previous kits, consider printing your own stencils. Many websites have simple designs you can print for free.
Click here for free Pumpkin Masters stencils.
Click here for pumpkin carving ideas and stencils by Disney’s FamilyFun.com.

IHOP has a tasty way to celebrate Halloween. Throughout the month of October you can find pumpkin pancakes, All-You-Can-Eat Buttermilk pancakes and Scary Face Pancakes on the menu (starting at $4.99).

Then, on Oct. 28 from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., there will be a day-long celebration Scary Face Pancake give-away for trick-or-treaters 12 and under. Kids will receive one free Count Spatula Scary Face Pancake — an oversized buttermilk pancake with a whipped topping mouth and strawberry nose served with two mini Oreo cookies and candy corn on the side (allowing kids to create their own Halloween hotcake), during the give-away.

     * If you like a little spooky background noise at your Halloween party or for visiting trick-or-treaters, check out the mp3 downloads on Amazon. They have numerous Halloween mixes in the $5 to $9 range, and even a few free downloads (just remember that Amazon’s pricing can change at any time).

    * Holiday-themed crafts are always a hit with kids. Print out some free Halloween coloring and activity pages throughout the month, or check out websites like Disney’s FamilyFun.com to get ideas for simple and cheap Halloween crafts. My favorite crafts on the website are the super simple “bat-o’-lanterns.”

Click here for the free eBook “11 Easy Halloween Craft Ideas: Halloween Decorations to Make for Your Home.”

    * Both McDonald’s and Wendy’s have Halloween coupon books available for only $1. Inside you’ll find coupons for all kinds of free goodies — hamburgers, apple slices, ice cream and juice or milk at McDonald’s and five free Frostys at Wendy’s.

     * Keep any eye out for online daily deals for Halloween stores and websites (next year, start watching for these beginning in mid-September).

Totsy (a daily deal site for children’s products) and Plum District (a daily deal site dedicated to mothers) have both had recent deals on costumes. These deals usually save you at least 50 percent off of the retail price.

    * Saturday is National Costume Swap Day, and there’s a related event here in the Roanoke Valley.

Bring your gently used costumes to the LFA Consignment Sale mentioned above today or Thursday, and you’ll receive a swap ticket. Then, on Saturday visit the sale again from 9 to 11 a.m. and you can pick out your free costume. You must have a swap ticket to attend this portion of the sale.

Coupon reminder and “Extreme Couponing 101″

I hope everyone had a great weekend. Now, not only is it Monday, but it’s the beginning of October. That means all of the printable online coupons have been re-set.
