Have a preschooler? Score a free season pass to Busch Gardens

Treat your little one to the Forest of Fun -- for free! Graphic by Busch Gardens Williamsburg.

If you have a preschooler in your household (a little one ages 3 to 5) and you are a Virginia resident, then Busch Gardens Williamsburg has a great offer for you.

Now through Oct. 28 parents can request a free Sesame Street Forest of Fun Preschool Pass to Busch Gardens. This pass normally sells for $120, and with it your child will get unlimited admission to the park (when accompanied by a paying adult, of course).

It looks like the promotion is not limited to 1 per household, so request as many as you need.

This would make for a great family day trip. Even if you only use the pass once you’re still saving on admission prices.

To sign up, click here.

Buy and sell prom dresses and accessories at this weekend’s Cinderella’s Closet event

The William Byrd High School Booster Club is sponsoring an event called Cinderella’s Closet this Saturday and Sunday (March 3 and 4) at Tanglewood Mall.

If you’re in need of a prom dress or accessories, this would be a great place to start your shopping. Gently worn prom, homecoming and special occasion dresses and accessories will be for sale.

If you have some of these goods you’re ready to get rid of (I still haven’t parted with some of my formals from high school, it’s probably time), then you can also register to sell your dresses and accessories.

The registration to sell a dress costs $5, while the registration to sell accessories is only $2. If your dress sells, an additional $5 will be deducted, with $2 to be donated to the Battered Women’s Shelter. The remaining $3 and money taken at registration will benefit the Booster Club.

Registration is Friday (March 2) from 6 to 8 p.m., and unsold items can be picked up Sunday (March 4) from 4 to 6 p.m.

The sale hours are Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.

For more information, email wbcheerboosters@gmail.com.

Coming Tuesday: IHOP National Pancake Day

Tomorrow (Feb. 28) is IHOP National Pancake Day. What does that mean for you, exactly?

Well, anyone who visits IHOP will receive a free short stack of Buttermilk pancakes. In return for the free pancakes, guests are asked to consider leaving a donation for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and other designated local charities.

Since the first National Pancake Day in 2006, customers have donated nearly 8 million dollars to participating charities. That should make your heart and your belly happy.

I think this is a fun promotion and have taken advantage of it with friends in the past.

For more details, click here.

Sunday Insert Round Up

Hope you’ve had a great weekend. Now, get ready to do some clipping!

There are two coupon booklets available today: Moments to Save (by Pepsi Co.) and Smartsource.

CVS is continuing the CVSCash Card promotion this week, so look out for those special tags throughout the store. There are some great deals on products like toothpaste, hair care and make up. Many products have coupons available and offer Extra Bucks after purchase. For example, you can get Colgate Sensitive Pro-Relief for 99 cents after Extra Bucks. There have been coupons for this in the past few weeks, so combine that with the sale and you should get some free toothpaste!

If you need some new kicks find the Rack Room Shoes and Shoe Carnival ads. Rack Room has a coupon good for $10 off a $60 purchase, plus their everyday buy 1, get 1 50% off deal.
Shoe Carnival has a coupon good for $10 off a purchase of $49.98 or more.

You’ll see a familiar brown paper bag in with your ads from Office Max. Anything you can fit in the bag, plus cases of printer paper, printer accessories, furniture, storage and select print center services, will be 20%.
Fill the bag with old files and you’ll also get 20% off their shredding services.

Belk’s Spring Home Sale begins today. Now through Tuesday, you can also use the coupon in the ad, good for 15% off your entire regular and sale priced home purchase.

At the Sears Customer Appreciation Sale you can get an extra 20% off clothing, accessories and intimate apparel with your Sears card, or an extra 15% off with the coupon in the ad and another form of payment.
You can also get an extra 15% off shoes, fragrances, cosmetics, bed, bath, housewares, luggage and fine jewelry with your Sears card, or an extra 10% off with the coupon in the ad and another form of payment.
This sale will be happening all week.

Michaels and AC Moore are both ready for the spring, and you can tell by their ads. Lots of spring and summer goodies, like silk flowers and outdoorsy crafts, are on sale. And of course there are coupons.
The coupons for Michaels include: 25% off your entire purchase of wall and tabletop frames, framed art and display cases and 40% off any regular priced item.
The coupons for AC Moore include: 20% off your entire purchase including sale items (tonight from 6 to 9 only), 55% off custom framing and 40% off any regular priced item.

Grand Home Furnishings Warehouse Sale: This weekend

Warehouse sales are great opportunities to score some major bargains. You may have read a bit about them from me in the past, and now’s the time to put that knowledge to work.

The Grand Home Furnishings Warehouse Sale is happening this Saturday and Sunday at Grand’s Warehouse Outlet (1221 Rhodes Ave., Roanoke).

The hours are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

You’ll find discontinued styles, scratch and dent merchandise and overstock items up to 80% off.

Additionally, there will be free hot dogs, a free moonwalk and balloons for the kids and displays of the General Lee Dodge Charger and Ghostbusters car.

I would recommend coming prepared with a truck, but if that’s not an option Grand will have delivery arranged with a local delivery service. All merchandise must be picked up by March 11.

**Cash, check, Grand credit card, VISA, MasterCard and Discover will all be accepted.**

All sales are final and all merchandise is sold as-is.

Now that all the gory details are out of the way…have you ever been to this sale? Did you have any luck? I have, and I’ve been able to walk out with a few cheap odds and ends.

If you check it out, be sure to let me know what you find!

You’ll see a familiar brown paper bag in with your ads from Office Max.

Sears is having a Customer Appreciation Sale next week. There’s a coupon in the ad, but you’ll get even more savings if you use your Sears card.

Remember, all of these ads may not appear in your paper. However, many retailers post their ads online, so always check there if you’re interested in finding out more details. You can also get printable coupons at both SmartSource and Redplum websites.

Toy coupons galore

These are some of the familiar brand names you can save on when you sign up for the Hasbro daily deals. Graphic by Hasbro.

Toys can be expensive, but it’s easier to save on them than you might think. I’ve come across a bunch of toy coupons lately, and if you combine them with a sale at Toys R Us, Target or other retailers you can save a bundle.

Hasbro has over $125 worth of coupons available now on their website. Just enter your email address and they’ll send you new deals every day through Feb. 29.

Coupons.com frequently has toy and DVD coupons available. Scroll through the pages each month so you don’t miss out. Also consider testing out various zip codes. Different areas could get different coupons each month.
Currently you can use the zip code 34102 and find $70 in Fisher Price coupons.

Barbie and Hot Wheels are not only offering you coupons, but the chance to give your input on their products.
Click here and you can submit a new design for Barbie. Enter the code FASHION to get started, and you’ll be rewarded with a coupon good for $5 off your next Barbie purchase. Your design will also be submitted and could be chosen to be one of Barbie’s next outfits in Walmart stores.
Click here to vote on which Hot Wheels you think should be released next. Once you’ve made your selection, you’ll be rewarded with a coupon good for $5 off your next Hot Wheels purchase. Your custom Hot Wheels pack could end up being sold at Walmart stores, too!

Leapfrog is offering a printable coupon on their website now good for $3 off any Tag Book priced $9.99 or more. I know these books are hot right now and they’re a great way to make reading a little more entertaining for kids who are just starting out. This coupon is good through March 31.

Discover Card holders receive free one-day shipping from Amazon through March 31

Discover Card holders should be pleased with this perk currently offered by Amazon.

Now through March 31 cardholders will receive free one-day shipping on items sold directly through Amazon by using the code DSCVRSHP and paying with their Discover.

This means other retailers selling their merchandise through Amazon don’t qualify. Look for the note that says “ships from and sold by Amazon.com” for confirmation that you’re product qualifies for the promotion.

Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Easter are all coming up in the next few months, so it might be a good time to pick up some presents early and save on shipping costs.

Plan your garden now and you’ll reap savings

Skip the grocery store and shop for veggies in your own yard this summer. Stock photo.

As painful as it is to see food prices creeping up each year, for some people the thought of gardening might be worse.

Sure, first lady Michelle Obama managed to start a vegetable garden at the White House, but she has a whole staff to help her. Where’s the time for gardening when you have a job, kids and pets, and you have to get dinner on the table by six?

Well, if you start now, which is the ideal time to plan before you have to plant the first seed, you might just find the time to garden in the coming months — especially when you realize the savings you’ll reap.

For the beginner, starting a garden may seem like an expensive task. You need tools, seeds and/or plants, water and possibly fertilizers. However, the National Gardening Association has estimated that for every $70 spent by the average family on their vegetable garden, they’ll grow an estimated $600 worth of vegetables.

I recently stumbled upon a project on Get Rich Slowly (www.getrichslowly.org), which tracked how much two Oregon residents, J.D. Roth and his wife, Kris, saved in one year by having their own fruit and vegetable garden. Even though this couple had been gardening for years and were pretty well established by the time this project started, it was an eye-opening read.

After planning their garden in February, starting their own seeds indoors during the remaining winter months and finally planting everything in early spring, the Roths harvested about $607 worth of fruits and vegetables, while investing about $318. And as they pointed out, your costs should become less each year because so many tools and gardening accessories are one-time purchases.

A few things you can do to keep the cost of a vegetable garden down include buying seed packets instead of starter plants, making your own rain barrel for watering, making your own “green” pesticides (the Roths mentioned using a dish of beer to rid a garden of slugs), and picking out fruit and vegetables that thrive in our area (you’ll get the most out of your dollar).

One of the best local, and free, resources around is the information from the Virginia Cooperative Extension (www.ext.vt.edu, 231-5299).

Starting small is also a good thing to keep in mind. It’s easy to get carried away when you’re browsing through seed books and retailers picking out all of your new toys. But it’s best to try a few easy-to-grow plants first such as tomatoes, peppers or squash. A small garden will also help you figure out how much time gardening will consume. Then if it doesn’t work out, you haven’t lost too much money in the process.

Once your green thumb really sprouts, try canning some of your harvest. This will save you money on vegetables throughout the winter and liven up the dreary, cold months.

If you can’t grow your own fruits or vegetables, visit one of the local U-pick farms. These fruits and vegetables are generally cheaper and fresher than what you’ll find in the grocery store.

Local farmers markets are also a great option. The vendors can give you more details about the produce you’re buying and answer questions about pesticides, the plant variety or storage of the food.

How do you save money on fruits and vegetables? Does your garden prove to be profitable?

Buy two iTunes gift cards, save $10 instantly

Receive two $25 iTunes gift cards from Staples for only $40 now through March 3. Graphic by apple.com.

If you’re an avid iTunes shopper (this girl is), then check out this great deal Staples has on iTunes gift cards now.

When you order two $25 gift cards from the retailer, you’ll receive an instant discount of $10. In other words, you’ll get $50 worth of gift cards for only $40 — that’s like free money/music!

Additionally, shipping is free.

It may be tough to think of dropping $40 on a whim, but you can hold onto these gift cards for birthdays and holidays down the road or use them yourself. You really are saving in the long run if you have a need for the cards at any point in the near future.

There’s a limit of four gift cards per person, and this offer will expire on March 3 (or sooner, as they reserve the right to end the promotion at any time).

If you’re intrested I suggest you buy your cards sooner rather than later!

Some of you are getting ready for a 3-day weekend thanks to President’s Day. If so, enjoy! If not, at least you have these goodies to look forward to on Sunday.

The President’s Day Sale at Office Max means there are tons of deals for $10 or under. Meanwhile, there are freebies (after rebate) up for grabs at Staples.

All You magazine for $1 an issue

All You magazine is a favorite among couponers. The magazine is filled with great coupons and other money saving tips. The couponers I recently profiled even brought it up.

Right now, Amazon has the magazine available for $1 an issue — so you’ll receive a full year for only $12! Usually the magazine retails for around $2.50.

Now, this is an auto-renewal deal, so that’s why it’s so much cheaper (the regular 1-year subscription goes for $19.95). That means if you’re not interested in keeping the magazine for over a year you’ll have to remember to cancel it.

Are you a fan of All You?

**Note: Amazon prices can change at any time, so look closely before you pull out the credit card!

JC Penney transforms itself

As you may have seen in this past Sunday’s ad, J.C. Penney has a new look — and I think it’s a good one. The retailer has completely transformed itself, changing its logo, its spokesperson and its pricing structure.

The company’s ad and store designs are clean and simple now, and their pricing and return policies are following suit.

The new pricing strategy, dubbed Fair and Square, includes three types of prices: best prices, month-long values and everyday.

Best prices are Penney’s lowest prices, which can be found on the first and third Fridays of each month. That means no more sales and coupons each week, just a simple sale schedule.

Month-long values are prices that are lower than the original sales price all month, but may not be as low as the best prices.

Everyday prices are the original sales prices of their products, which since the redesign are lower than their original prices before.

These prices are also color-coded. Prices highlighted in blue represent best prices, white represent month-long values and red represent everyday prices.

One example of the pricing structure can be found on the store’s website, which compares the prices of a St. John’s Bay women’s shirt. In 2011, the shirt’s original price was $11. In the new pricing system, the shirt’s everyday price is $7, the month-long value is $5 and the best price is $4.

The store is also revamping its return policy. The new policy has no restrictions and appears to be very similar to the retailer Kohl’s. Penney now accepts items purchased more than 90 days ago, small electronics, fine jewelry (including special and personalized orders), special occasion dresses, furniture, gift registry items, made-to-measure window coverings, jcp.com items, salon merchandise, Sephora products and perishable food items.

With a receipt you’ll receive an even exchange or full refund of the purchase price in the original form of payment. With a gift receipt you’ll receive an even exchange or refund at the gift receipt price in the form of a Penney gift card. Without a receipt you’ll receive an even exchange or refund at the current retail price in the form of a gift card.

None of these return scenarios have time limits.

You’ll also see a new face representing the company — Ellen DeGeneres.

DeGeneres has been quoted saying that working at Penney was one of her first jobs, and jokes that she’s happy to have her employee discount again. The new partnership is another part of the effort to usher in a new era for the retailer, which turns 110 this year.

In a press release, Michael Francis, president of J.C. Penney Co., said the company chose DeGeneres because of her “great warmth” and “down-to-earth attitude.” She also has millions of fans.

Looking at the new ads for the retailer, that down-to-earth, fun and vibrant attitude is equally represented in print.

What do you think of the J.C. Penney transformation? Are you more or less likely to shop at the retailer?

Here are some photos from a recent trip I took to the Valley View location:

Elizabeth Arden Warehouse Sale extended

Good news! The Elizabeth Arden Warehouse Sale I posted about last week has been extended and will be happening today and tomorrow (Feb. 13 and 14) from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

I stopped by the sale this weekend and there were tons of fragrances and makeup goods to be found.

For more details, call 983-6594.

Free Valentine’s printables

Need a last minute card, or just want a holiday craft for the kids? Check out these Valentine’s themed printables.

Disney Junior will let your child design their own card here for free. They can add a message and “stickers” of some of their favorite Disney characters, and then choose to send the Valentine via email or print it.

Little Jedis will love these free Star Wars printable Valentine’s. These cards cannot be emailed, but do come with a template for printable envelopes as well.

These are just a couple I found and chose to point out since the characters are so popular. With a Google search you can find an endless supply of printables.

The Michaels ad this week doesn’t have as many coupons as usual, but you’ll still find a couple. One is good for 50% off any regular priced item, and another offers 25% off your entire purchase of wall & tabletop frames, framed art and display cases.
Loads of merchandise throughout the store is 40 to 50% off this week, so you should find some bargains without a coupon.

Should you use coupons on dates?

Thanks to all the blog readers who joined the conversation we had about this a couple weeks ago — your input was great!

Coupons aren’t only for groceries and cleaning products, you can find them now for just about anything — including restaurants, spas to theme parks.

So with Valentine’s Day approaching, the question of etiquette when using coupons on a date popped into my mind.

I’m not sure what Miss Manners would say, but it’s a topic that most people have a pretty firm stance on. Some would be offended that their date was being cheap, while others feel it shows a person’s smarts when it comes to saving.

Personally, I fall into the latter category (shocker, I know). When I asked blog readers how they felt about the topic, the response was generally positive and most cited the economy as a major factor.

With the popularity of Groupon and other daily deal websites, it seems like coupons have adopted a certain “coolness” factor — almost as if people forget that these discounted vouchers are in fact coupons.

Many of these deals are “two-for” or require a minimum to be spent, often too much for one person, so they are ideal for couples. Blog reader Jamie suggested using one of these deals as an icebreaker to ask someone out on a date. Her suggested phrasing: “ ‘I have a great daily deal I’ve been wanting to use but it works better for two people. Do you want to go with me?’ ”

Other readers suggested holding off on using coupons on the first date, even if they support using them down the road. Reader Other John commented, “Once there’s more of an established relationship and the other person has an idea that you like using coupons and saving money, then sure … go for it.”

However, reader Mike said your date’s response to using coupons could be a red flag.

“Knowing what I do now, I would probably use one just to see how the girl reacted. If she is too much of a princess that it would bother her for me to be wise with my hard-earned money, then it would show me I was dating the wrong person to start with,” he pointed out.

From the comments, it seemed like married couples enjoyed using coupons on their dates, especially those with big families. Reader Shanon “Nurse Snow” bragged that she and her husband get a rush from saving money, while reader Meghan explained that with one child and one on the way, she’s more than happy to clip a coupon for their rare dates.

So where do you stand? Is using a coupon on a date smart or is it a big no-no?

If you’re not ashamed to show off your savings, check out the Sweetheart Deals on Roanoke.com. These daily deals will be available through Feb. 13 and offer discounts on massages, dance lessons, photography sessions and dining for 50 percent off or better.

Get 20% off digital iTunes gift cards from Best Buy

Bargains on gift cards, well, you could say I get a little over-excited about them. It’s like free money! Granted, you can only spend it in certain ways, but still…free is always good.

Right now Best Buy is running a special on digital iTunes gift cards and they would be a great Valentine’s treat for someone special who’s far away.

All digital iTunes cards on Best Buy’s website are currently 20% off — meaning a $100 card is only $80, a $50 card is only $40, and so on. That translates into free music, music videos, TV shows or movies from iTunes.

There’s no coupon code necessary to get this deal (the discount is already reflected in the price online). Just keep in mind that you won’t receive a physical iTunes card. Instead, they’ll email the recipient a code.
