Penney’s continues new sales strategies

The Levi's Shop in the Valley View Mall JC Penney. REBECCA BARNETT | The Roanoke Times

Since J.C. Penney announced some major changes in January, customers have had to pick a side: old or new J.C. Penney?

But you may want to wait before you officially choose. The retailer plans changes through 2015, and big things are still happening.

In January, J.C. Penney announced it would no longer have coupons, changed its pricing strategy, revamped the return policy and signed Ellen DeGeneres on as spokeswoman.

Three of these changes remain in effect today: no coupons, a clear-cut return policy and a collaboration with DeGeneres, despite a negative response from some conservative groups.

The pricing strategy, however, has been altered again. The retailer had introduced monthly deals and “best” prices on select products as a way to simplify shopping strategies. Those are now gone.

Instead there are only everyday prices and clearance merchandise – something shoppers said they missed. Each Friday, merchandise is put on clearance to make room for new products, and the clearance price represents the lowest markdown.

“We’re really focused on making it simple for the customer,” said Kate Coultas, a J.C. Penney spokeswoman.

Though there are still no coupons, shoppers can earn jcp rewards.

J.C. Penney cardmembers are automatically enrolled in this program. If you’re not a cardmember, you can register up to three credit or debit cards, including a jcp card, upon joining the program.

With qualifying purchases totaling $100 per month, a $10 reward certificate will be emailed to the shopper to use the following month. Gold card members can earn up to two rewards for spending $200 per month, and platinum card members can earn up to three rewards for spending $300 per month. Shoppers will also receive an email when their jcp rewards are about to expire.

Introducing Shops, free kids haircuts at salon

There are also some physical changes happening throughout stores. The retailer has widened aisles and hung fewer items on racks to make them easier for browsing.

Another recent addition are the “Shops,” which are brand-specific shopping areas within the store. Locally, the Valley View Mall location has 11 shops: MNG by Mango, Levi’s (for men and women), Arizona (for juniors and young men), I jeans by Buffalo, Liz Claiborne, Izod and jcp (for men and women).

And there might be one other coming soon: Sephora.

“Sephora has been discussed and is a possibility,” said Denise Gordon, Valley View store leader.

Gordon explained that by having Shops, which appear simply to be nice displays of select brands, J.C. Penney is hoping it will feel like a specialty department store. Each brand’s Shop is tailored to a specific style. Eventually, they hope, the entire store will be a collection of shops, making it easier for shoppers to find what they want.

By the end of 2013, J.C. Penney stores will have 40 Shops in stores nationwide and 100 by the end of 2015. The Valley View location is optimistic it will eventually have each Shop.

Some specialty areas of the store, like housewares, lingerie, shoes and children’s apparel, haven’t been affected yet by Shops, but Gordon said most every department will be touched by 2015.

While J.C. Penney’s salon will remain untouched, starting in November the promotion offering free haircuts for kids in kindergarten through sixth grade will return each Sunday.

Throughout October the salon will also be offering free cuts to breast cancer survivors in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Shoppers sound off

Responses to the changes at the retailer have been mixed.

Taniko Belt of Roanoke has been a J.C. Penney shopper for at least 12 years and still loves it.

“There’s something for everyone in the family. I’m a mother and I love the clothing, the styles and the people who work here,” she explained while shopping there Tuesday morning. “And I love the prices, it’s all so affordable.”

Isaac Podyma of Bedford doesn’t shop often, but he likes the changes. He was also there Tuesday.

“I like that they put everything I like and need in one part of the store,” Podyma said.

However, he wasn’t too impressed with the prices. He also had trouble finding his size in the Shops, which featured many different styles but a limited number of sizes for each.

Several readers have commented on the Shoptimist blog about the changes. Many miss the coupons, and there seemed to be an age divide: young shoppers like the changes, while longtime customers do not.

Cary Ridgeway wrote: “No longer shop there anymore since they changed thingsâ? .Used to love the old JCP, don’t like the new one at all!”

Trish agreed: “I also shopped at JCP and it was my favorite but since they stopped the Door Busters on Saturday mornings and coupons I no longer shop there. The selection is poor and overpriced!”

Shanon doesn’t feel the store is for her anymore, commenting: “I very rarely shop there anymore. I used to get the majority of my wardrobe there, but since the changes, I can no longer find good deals. As a mom of 3, I’m always looking for bargains, which the old JCP had. The new JCP seems to be targeting the young professionals.â? I think they have created a lose-lose situation for themselves.”

Meanwhile, Amber is a new fan of the store. She wrote: “I had stayed away from JCP after reading all the negative comments in the first article. I recently went there and was pleasantly surprised. â? There are still plenty of bargains. I shop for my toddler and the prices at JCP now are cheaper than they used to be. They are also much cheaper than the other department stores for the same brands.”

Kristen agreed and wrote: “I like the new JC Penney. As a younger (mid-20s) shopper, I never shopped there before all the changes. There just wasn’t enough options for my taste in style. Now, I can find some really cute, stylish but not too trendy looks for half the price of what you would find at Macy’s.”

Unfortunately, the numbers aren’t on J.C. Penney’s side. According to a Sept. 24 article in Business Week, the company’s shares traded at $43.18 on Feb. 9 before hitting a year-low of $19.06 on July 18.

Additionally, in early September, Forbes reported that in the first six months of 2012 sales dropped 21.3 percent.

Will Shops, free haircuts and a revamped look get shoppers back in the store? Only time will tell, but Ron Johnson, chief executive officer of J.C. Penney, has high hopes.

In a news release Johnson said, “The back-to-school season presents the perfect opportunity to offer free haircuts for kids and unveil our new Shops, giving customers a first glimpse of what will soon be an entirely new retail experience. We know how important it is for kids to make a great first impression and with low prices every day, jcpenney is making it easier for parents to shop without having to wait for a sale.”

What do you think of the long-term plan for J.C. Penney? Do you plan to shop at the store?

Shop Hop gives sewing, quilting shops a boost

In an unstable economy, most anyone you ask would agree that it’s important to support our local businesses.

Specialty shops can have an especially hard time as folks cut back on spending for hobbies and special treats. The Roanoke chapter of the American Sewing Guild has found its own way of showing support for the shops in their niche with the Shop Hop.

The Shop Hop is a September shopping event held in celebration of National Sewing Month. During this weekend-long event, members of the sewing guild and the general public are encouraged to visit a select group of stores that cater to the needs of sewers and quilters and advertise in the guild’s newsletter.

“This is all for the purpose of promoting and supporting the retailers who support us,” Sally Rodgers, an organizer of the event, explained.

The Hop took place Sept. 14-15 and saw 145 participants — almost a 50 percent increase over 2011.

How it works

Shoppers are asked to visit as many shops as they can during the Hop. At each location, they receive a pass to be signed or stamped by that shop. The passes are turned in at the last stop by the shopper and then entered to win prize baskets from the guild.

Each participating shop is asked to donate five items to be included in the prize baskets, which is the only cost for the retailers to participate. The guild also throws in a couple of gift cards for Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores. This year, the guild had six participating shops: The Quilting Connection, Goodwill stores, Alpine Sewing Machine Co., Old Trinity Schoolhouse Quilt Shop, Quilting Essentials and Creative Quilting.

“They are always thrilled to participate,” Lois Atkins, another organizer of the event, said.

Though shoppers must visit each shop in order to be eligible for a prize, they don’t have to buy anything. However, Rodgers and Atkins agreed that most people do; some even stop by the shops multiple times within the weekend.

This was the third year of the event. Atkins and Rodgers agreed that the numbers have continued to grow each year and attribute a large amount of this year’s growth to the participating shops, who sent a notice about the event to their email lists.

Pat Langheim of Quilting Essentials explained that the surrounding guilds come to participate in the event as well. Rodgers and Atkins collected cards from shoppers who came from Wytheville, Buena Vista, Martinsville and in one case even from Denver.

“It’s a wonderful, positive event, we just have the best time,” Langheim said. “I think it introduces us to many new people who may not consider your store. Once they get in here and find our fabric we seem to have a lot of repeat business.”

Building awareness

In addition to the local Shop Hop, the guild also organizes an Out of Town Shop Hop, which took place from Aug. 1 to Sept. 15 this year.

During this members-only event, guild members are encouraged to visit fabric, sewing and quilting retailers that are within a day’s drive. The rules for this Hop differ slightly. Shoppers get an extended period to shop, must make one or more purchases and get an entry for each shop they visit. Yearly dues for the sewing guild, which are necessary to participate in this event, are $50 initially and $45 to renew.

“The idea is to just get in the shops,” Rodgers said. “It’s really to our benefit to have these people here.”

For retailers and shoppers alike, the Shop Hop has proven to be a fun and profitable event to support local businesses.

Said Atkins, “This is an opportunity to become aware of what the Roanoke Valley has to offer. One of our goals is to try to maintain the businesses we have.”

Saturday and Sunday: J.Crew September Sample Sale

I love J.Crew sample sales (aka warehouse sales). I really, really do. So, I was jumping for joy when I finally got word of the next sale, which is THIS weekend.

The warehouse in Lynchurg (25 Millrace Drive) will be open on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Click “Directions” in the map below to get directions from your house to the sale.

I’ve written about these sales in the past (check it out here and here) and have gotten some amazing deals — we’re talking over $1000 worth of clothes and accessories for around $100.

After going a couple times, I’ve abandoned the idea that you have to be there early unless you’re looking for an extremely rare item, like a wedding dress. Our local warehouse is constantly replenishing their stock during the sale, so you may not really benefit from getting there early and waiting in line. Last time I went after lunch and walked right in with no trouble. I still managed to find a giant bag full of clothes, too!

The J.Crew discount store next door is also open during sale hours, so you may find some deals in there, as well.

For more information about the sale, call the Lynchburg store at (434) 316-6324. If you’d like to be notified about future sales, ask them to add you to their email list.

Have you ever attended a J.Crew sample sale? What was your experience like?

Free $5 Amazon mp3 credit from Scott Shared Values

Graphic by scottbrand.com.

If you haven’t signed up for Scott Shared Values yet, now is a great time.

The site is offering a free $5 Amazon mp3 credit to members who answer one simple question about their buying habits — that’s it!

Once you answer the question you’ll be given a one-time-use code to enter on Amazon and retrieve your $5 credit.

Your mp3 credit won’t expire until Jan. 31, and Amazon runs specials on individual mp3 songs and albums all the time, some as low as 99 cents or $2 per album!

The site was a bit slow when I was entering my codes (presumably from all the sudden traffic), so do be patient.

New details about Walgreens Balance Rewards, including info on how to sign up now

Details are finally coming out about the new rewards program being offered by Walgreens.

With the new system you’ll earn points for every purchase you make in stores and online. You’ll also get points for other activities, like participating in the Walk with Walgreens program.

Points earned can then be cashed in for Redeption Dollars that can be used on products throughout the store. There’s even an app for iPhone and Android to help you track your points. Members can also scan their mobile devices at the register to earn points and savings and redeem awards without carrying around a plastic card.

Here’s the break down of the points system:
5,000 points = $5
10,000 points = $10
18,000 points = $20
30,000 points = $35
40,000 points = $50

The new program won’t take effect until September 16, but if you sign up early you’ll be entered to win 1 million points.

For more info, check out the video below or click here.

How do you feel about the changes being made at Walgreens?

Having an affordable and adorable baby shower

I had my first experience throwing a baby shower a couple of weeks ago.

I was totally new to this scene — it’s the first baby expected among my immediate family and friends. The pressure of hosting can be overwhelming with so much involved — money, food, gifts, invitations — especially when you’re in unfamiliar territory.

While I’m extremely frugal, I’m also a stickler for detail, so I had a crash course in throwing an affordable and adorable baby shower. With a little research and the help of my co-host — my mother — we were able to put together a great party.

The theme of the shower was jungle animals, coinciding with the prints in the baby boy’s room. After browsing Etsy, Pinterest and Google, my brain was filled with easy ideas.

Here’s what I settled on, and how I managed to cut corners.

Food

At parties, folks tend to be attracted to the foods that are familiar, yet tasty, so that’s what we stuck with.

Ham biscuits, chicken salad croissants, veggies and dip, fruit salad and a pasta salad were on the menu. What made this affordable menu even better was the fact that all of these dishes could be made in advance, saving us a headache on the day of the shower.

For dessert, we served carrot cake cupcakes, the mom-to-be’s favorite, topped with icing and an animal cracker. The easy cake toppers fit the theme perfectly and didn’t cut into our budget. Consider looking for similar pre-made goodies that can accentuate your homemade treats.

Invitations and decor

The invitations and decorations took the most research. We expected just 14 people at the shower, so buying invitations, plates and napkins in bulk was out of the question. We wouldn’t really be saving anything if there were dozens of paper goods left over.

After considering a few products that could be personalized or pre-printed, we finally settled on some sale-priced Hallmark goods from Shindigz.com. Plates, napkins, tablecloths, a banner, invitations and thank-you cards were all purchased for under $40, and they all matched. Providing thank-you cards for the shower recipient is a nice perk if you can find some that fit the bill.

Favors

My mother is an ambitious lady to say the least, and she chose to tackle the feat of providing each of our guests with a box of homemade truffles. She found a simple recipe with simple ingredients, and we ended up with an attractive and delicious favor.

Plain truffle boxes can be purchased at most craft stores, and we chose to line the plain boxes with gold leaf papers. Because we weren’t providing favors for a big crowd, it was an affordable option, but this could turn into a pricey venture. Michaels, A.C. Moore and Jo-Ann Fabric & Craft stores have coupons in the newspaper and online almost weekly. These can lead to big savings if your merchandise is eligible.

One of our best finds was the stickers we used to secure the truffle boxes.

I found a seller on Etsy who offered jungle-themed stickers that could be personalized. I ordered 24 stickers with “Thank you!” printed on them for merely $10 — a bargain for a custom product.

Etsy has endless possibilities in the realm of custom paper products, and there’s something for every budget. Many sellers even offer a print-at-home option.

Luckily, these things were the most we had to worry about. There was a request to leave games off the itinerary, which also saved some money.

The location was free because it was held in the mom-to-be’s home. This ended up being a great plan, as she didn’t have to load all her loot into the car when the party was over. Cleanup was also a breeze because we purchased all paper and plastic products, and all of our food could be put right back into the refrigerator.

Do you have any special tips or tricks when it comes to hosting a shower? Share your ideas!

Elizabeth Arden Warehouse Sale: Today through Saturday

Hello, shoppers! This is Courtney Cutright keeping an eye on the blog while Rebecca is out of the office.

She wanted me to let you know there’s an overstock sale at the Elizabeth Arden Warehouse in Roanoke that begins today (Sept. 10) and runs through Saturday (Sept. 15).

Rebecca tells me she’s been to this sale before and scored lots of deals, including makeup brushes, makeup, fragrances (men’s and women’s), cosmetic and travel bags, and more — all at deeply discounted prices.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the warehouse (3030 Nicholas Ave., Roanoke). Call 983-6594 if you need more information about the sale.

If you go, come back to the blog and share the deals you find.

Sunday Insert Roundup

Sitting down to clip coupons is my second favorite part of enjoying Sunday’s paper. Reading it is first, of course!

Today’s two SmartSource inserts contain more than $125 worth of coupons, including several high-value offers. You can save $10 off 70-count non-drowsy Claritin and $5 off several Revlon makeup products.

The redplum insert is nice too, with more than $30 in coupons including offers from Hardee’s and Baskin Robbins.

You also will find $20 in savings at Smokey Bones and $8 off at Logan’s Roadhouse.

Staples and Office Max have a few 25-cent school supply items on sale, including 8-pack BIC Round Stic pens and three-inch-by-five-inch index cards, respectively. Walmart‘s print ad features sales on business and home office supplies.

Target‘s ad this week is full of “free gift card” with purchase offers. The front page touts a special edition Keurig K-Cup coffeemaker for $149.99 that comes with a $30 Target gift card. The ad states “Free gift card offers available on all other Keurig brewers.” There’s also a $5 gift card offer when you buy two Folgers or Millstone brand 16- to 18-count K-Cup packs ($10.99) or Keurig Vue packs ($11.99).

CVS has tons of extrabucks rewards offers. Shoppers can earn $10 for spending $25 on select Bounty, Charmin, Duracell and Puffs Products. Another $10 reward is available when you spend $30 on any Gillette shaving items.

Walgreens‘ line of health and wellness products are buy-one-get-one 50 percent off, including congestion, allergy and pain relief over-the-counter medications and smoking cessation products.

Kroger‘s buy 10 save $5 promotion is available on some 75 items. And the grocer is advertising “new everyday” savings of 20 percent off with the purchase of six or more bottles of wine (750 ml or larger).

Now, back to my cup of coffee …

Sunday Insert Preview

Look for two SmartSource coupon inserts and one from redplum in Sunday’s paper. I am excited to return to clipping after last Sunday’s holiday weekend paper didn’t contain any of these coupon inserts.

You will find $28 worth of savings for two restaurants near Valley View Mall.

School and office supply sales continue next week at Office Max, Staples and Walmart. I may go ahead and pick up some of the 25-cent items to use at home this school year or to save for next fall.

Target‘s insert features $125 in “free gift card” with purchase offers. Pair these offers with coupons and save an additional 5 percent when you pay with a Target REDcard. Using the credit or debit REDcard is like shopping tax free!

Happy clipping!

[UPDATED: 9/21] Kroger doubles max fuel points redemption, offer 4x points on gift card purchases

Kroger this week announced the extension of a promotion that doubles the maximum points redeemable for a discount at its fuel centers.

Through the rest of 2012, Kroger Plus Card shoppers can collect up to 2,000 points each month and save up to $2 per gallon of fuel.

Grocery shoppers who use the loyalty card earn 100 fuel points for every $100 spent in Kroger stores. Each 100 points translates to 10 cents off per gallon of gas in a single fill up — and the previous maximum redemption was 1,000 points or $1 off each gallon.

“We have extended this promotion at our customers’ request,” spokesman Carl York stated in a news release. “We know it comes at a good time with the continued increase in prices at the pump.”

The quadruple fuel points promotion has ended.

There is a great way to earn extra points now too. Most gift cards sold in the grocery store earn double points everyday. Quadruple points are being offered for a limited time. The purchase of a $50 Kroger gift card, which usually earns 100 gas points is now worth 200 points, for example.

Most stores have large displays of gift cards for other popular retailers, restaurants and subscriptions, from Aeropostle to T.G.I. Friday’s and Xbox LIVE. You can even shop online at the Kroger Gift Card Mall.

Now would be a great time to purchase gift cards for your own holiday shopping or to give as gifts this winter!

Starbucks deal offer available until midnight

Hey there. This is Courtney Cutright filling in while Rebecca is out.

I wanted to let you know about a Living Social deal that’s available until midnight tonight: $5 for a $10 Starbucks card eGift. That’s almost like getting two espresso drinks for the price of one.

This deal is timed perfectly with the recent release of fall menu items, including pumpkin spice latte, salted caramel mocha and pumpkin cream cheese muffin.

I am sitting in the newsroom and savoring the last sips of my first pumpkin spice latte of the season. That’s my favorite Starbucks beverage. If only it was available all year long …

Another coffee-related note: I purchased an iPhone this summer and the Starbucks app is one of my favorites. I love using PayPal to load money onto a gift card and using my phone to pay the cashier! And I am earning points toward rewards.

Too bad I never tried to Android version. How many of you readers use the Starbucks or other retail apps? Which would you recommend?

Stores update their discount policies

From time to time, retailers update their policies and smart shoppers need to stay in the know. Here are some changes that effect shoppers locally:

Dollar Tree stores, where everything is $1 or less, are now accepting manufacturer’s coupons.

If you’re shopping in-store, you can use up to two print-at-home coupons per shopping trip and one manufacturer coupon per item. There are a few important details: Coupons for free items with no purchase requirements will not be accepted and coupons cannot be redeemed for more than the purchase price of the item. Management also has the right to refuse any coupon or limit quantities, so certain rules could differ depending on which store you shop. For more information, visit www.dollartree.com.

Target recently introduced Target Baby Alerts. Exclusive baby coupons, deals and other announcements will be texted to shoppers up to six times per month. Some of the deals for August include buy one, get one half-off Gerber onesies, $2 off Burt’s Bees Baby Bee toiletry items, $2 off Huggies and 10 percent off your first baby order. To start receiving these text alerts, text BABY to 827438.

Walgreens is reworking its shopping rewards program and will soon introduce Balance Rewards.

Shoppers can enroll in the new program online early at bit.ly/R7Ohr8, though the program won’t officially start until Sept. 16. Full details haven’t been released yet, but the new program will be points-based, giving shoppers the opportunity to earn points for shopping and redeem them for products and other rewards.

Walmart is bringing back layaway for the 2012 holiday season after a successful run in 2011. Layaway will become available again Sept. 16 and be available through Dec. 14. Customers who “like” their favorite store will have the opportunity to put items on layaway two days early.

This year’s program offers an extended list of eligible categories. Also, shoppers who make their final payment will receive a refund of the $15 layaway fee in the form of a Walmart gift card. According to the retailer’s website, the down payment for layaway is 10 percent or $10 (whichever is greater). To be eligible, individual items must be priced at $15 or more, and the total layaway purchase must be $50 or more. For more information, visit www.walmart.com/layaway.

I’m a big CVS shopper. If you can get in the right rotation with their Extra Bucks rewards program, a lot of money can be saved. If you’re just starting out or an avid CVS shopper, this promotion is very attractive.

From Sept. 16 to Dec. 15, CVS is offering 4 percent back quarterly — double the 2 percent they usually offer — each time you use your Extra Care card in stores or for online purchases. You will have to sign up at bit.ly/PrSO8H to take advantage of this deal, but this could have a huge impact on the Extra Bucks you receive. Have your Extra Care card handy when you sign up, you will need to enter the number on the back.

Details about the evolving Walgreens rewards policy will be updated there as they are released.

Sunday through Tuesday: 25% off for teachers (with coupon) at Office Max

Today through Tuesday, Sept. 4 Office Max is offering teachers 25% off their entire purchase with this printable coupon.

This discount applies to regular, sale and clearance priced merchandise — so stock up!

Exclusions include: postage stamps, TVs, printers, computers, monitors, eReaders, tablets, projectors, shredders, typewriters, cash registers, hard drives, gift cards, prepaid cards, phone cards, FedEx shipping services, Design Center Kiosk items, desktop publishing services, custom stamps, awards and plaques, Virgin Mobile devices, Ctrlcenter services, MaxAssurance plans, and OfficeMax essentials kits. There will also be no rain checks.

That still leaves most school supplies eligible, though!

You must be a Max Perks for Teachers member to get the deal, but you can easily sign up here or in stores. It’s also a good idea to bring your school ID.
