What are your favorite freebies and discounts for veterans?
I’m working on a column about freebies and deals for veterans in honor of Veterans Day (Nov. 11).
I’ve got a great list so far, but I don’t want to miss your favorites.
If you’re a military vet, or know someone who is, share your favorite discounts in the comments section below. I’m especially interested to see if I can find any deals at local retailers and restaurants.
I know many of you have been suggesting this list for a while, so hopefully it leads to big savings for some people who really deserve it.
Note: TheĀ 3rd Annual Virginia Veterans Parade in Downtown Roanoke is happening Saturday, Nov. 10 at 11 a.m.

Not enough businesses give discounts to veterans
It’s true, not enough businesses did have discounts for veterans. The list is still short and it’s not all year round too. I just wish they’ll give these veterans more thought.
Lowes and Home Depot are the only two I know of…local businesses don’t seem to participate in this sort of recognition. Grateful for those businesses that do! Exponentially more now days than in earlier years where being a veteran was more of a liability than a resource…
Lowe’s and Home Depot are the only ones we know about. Are there others? Applebee’s only gives one to the vet on Veteran’s Day.
VERY LITTLE VET.DISCOUNT IN THE ROANOKE AREA.FLORANCE ALA. AND NAGS HEAD N.C. ARE GOOD FOR VET. DISCOUNTS.AND THE BIGGEST PLACE FOR VET. DISCOUNTS IS THE PIGON FORGE TENN.AREA FOOD LODGEING AND YOU NAME IT,IF YOU ARE A VET YOU GET IT.
Sam’s club has a military membership. The member receives a $15 gift card when signing up or renewing his/her membership. Has to be done at the Service Desk.
Aside from Lowes and HD, I’m hard-pressed to think of anywhere locally that gives a regular military discount. We have friends in the Army and Navy who are from here, and they almost never can get one. The place we bought our home from did offer $500 off to vets though, but I’m not sure if they still offer that, it’s been 5 years.
But, one of the really great discounts we fouind out about, from visiting with a friend in Georgia, is that active-duty military can get free annual passes to all National Parks, so they can get in for free. Their spouses and kids also qualify, and up to 2 non-family guests. We took advantage of that in seeing Fort Pulaski near Savannah…it’s not well-promoted, but it’s something that is a nice thing to do for the troops.
Golden Corral in Pinehurst, NC gives vets a free meal on Veteran’s Day.
Thanks for all of the suggestions. My column this Saturday will include many of the deals available Nov. 9-12 in honor of the holiday, but I’m doing some research to link to some other sites that do a good job of outlining places that give deals year round. There were a few I had never heard of but could definitely come in handy. A few are even extended to the family of active duty/veterans which I think is especially great.
Verizon Wireless gives a discount on service (but not, I think phones) to the military member/retiree but not family members.
I think that Rack Room Shoes gives a Military discount…used to be all of the time but the last time I inquired it was only one day a week.
First Team gives a military discount on at least some cars.
Those are the only ones I can think of now.
Area Buffalo Wild Wings offer military discounts on meal (no alcohol) but you must be in uniform. This is year round.
Thunder Valley go-karts offer discounts with military ID. This is great for military families. Also year round.
