How to brave gift returns

Have gifts to return? Do your research before you hit the mall. Stock art.

Chances are, you have a few Christmas gifts to return. It’s inevitable that gifts get repeated, clothes don’t fit or something is just not your style — and that’s OK. Here are some tips for braving the post-holiday return rush:

Hopefully you didn’t tear off packaging and tags on Christmas morning. If so, be prepared for the retailer to reject the return. This is especially true for video games, DVDs, CDs and computer software. If you can’t return the item, consider selling it on Craigslist, eBay or Amazon if it’s something you absolutely can’t use. Donating unwanted items is another alternative.

If you know where a gift came from, check the store’s return policy. This can give you all kinds of useful information. Important things to look for include restocking fees, how long returns are accepted after the purchase date and what items are eligible to be returned or exchanged.

Ask for a receipt. While etiquette experts may frown upon this, I think it’s perfectly fine to ask for the receipt for an item in most cases. I would hate for something I gifted to sit unused rather than hand over the receipt. This is especially true for family and friends I’m close to. With the introduction of gift receipts in recent years, which hide the cost, I think this process is less awkward than ever.

Review your shipping options. If one of your gifts was mailed to you, shipping it back may be necessary. In some cases shipping will be paid for so always check your options. Also remember to get a receipt and tracking number from the shipping service for anything that’s sent back. These will come in handy if the package is lost. Of course, if there is a brick-and-mortar location nearby, check to see if they’ll accept the return in person.

Don’t feel the need to rush back to the store. Most stores extend their return deadline if an item is purchased in November or December. If you can take advantage of this extension, you can avoid the rush to return items during this first weekend after Christmas.

A lost receipt isn’t the end of the world. Some retailers can look up the purchase if you have the credit or debit card the product was bought with and some have special barcodes that are placed on each item upon purchase (like Macy’s). You may only receive store credit without a receipt or not get the full purchase price back in cash. Speak to a store clerk to learn about your options.

Check out Consumer Reports’ list of hassle-free return policies. Not only can this help you now, but it might influence where you make future purchases. Some of the stores on the list with excellent return policies that I can vouch for include Kohl’s, Lands’ End, Nordstrom and CVS.

What store return policies do you love or loathe?

Sunday Insert Preview: The coupons are back!

Remember to spend FSA dollars before the New Year

If you have a flexible spending account your FSA money is most likely use-it-or-lose it by Jan. 1. If this is the case — make sure you use it!

You don’t have to spend this money at the doctor’s office. Many products in drug stores are FSA eligible, and after purchasing them you can submit your receipt to insurance.

Some  commonly eligible items include bandages, over the counter prescriptions, contact lenses, reading glasses, sunscreen, pregnancy tests and more. Look up your company’s policy and stock up on any items you need to use up that money.

Here is some helpful information from CVS and Walgreen’s about FSA merchandise.

Tip: I know CVS tallies up all of your FSA eligible purchases at the bottom of each receipt. That can be very helpful!

Retailers, shoppers are now pulling all-nighters

While it’s not unusual for stores to extend their hours around the holidays, retailers have started taking it to another level.

Begun at 7 a.m. Friday, Macy’s is open through midnight Sunday to host its last One Day Sale (which, despite the name, actually lasts more than two days) of the year. Toys R Us, which has been open until midnight or 1 a.m. regularly since Black Friday, will be open 24 hours a day now through 10 p.m. on Christmas Eve.

This isn’t entirely a new practice. Macy’s started experimenting with 24-hour shopping in select stores in 2006, according to a news release. Toys R Us is in its third consecutive year of offering 24-hour shopping in the days leading up to Christmas, according to Alyssa Peera, a representative from the retailer.

Outside of that, you’ll find that many stores are opening at 6 or 7 a.m. and not closing until midnight this weekend, and sometimes keeping those hours through Monday.

Blog readers are generally supportive of extended shopping hours during the holiday season, but most don’t see the need for stores to be open all night. We already have 24/7 shopping at our fingertips with online shopping and most admitted they don’t see themselves ever being in a store past midnight. Parents and shoppers who work odd hours, however, appreciate stores being open early and staying open until midnight.

Blog reader Meghan wrote, “I love going to Toys R Us around 8-9 at night. My boys are already asleep and I can shop in peace! That’s the latest that I will shop though.”

And reader Other John added, “We do the bulk of our shopping later in the day, usually after 9 p.m. We do that because I would much rather have to shop around the stockers, than hoards of other shoppers. But, the places we typically shop are either already 24-hour or open until 10-midnight anyway, so it [additional stores being open 24 hours] doesn’t help us a bit.”

However, blog reader Reynold was one who enjoys the late night hours, which he says are less busy and can offer a better selection of merchandise.

What surprised me were the readers who commented that a store staying open 24 hours made them less likely to shop there. Walmart and various drug stores have been open 24 hours a day for years. Black Friday has extended itself into Thanksgiving evening, creating a 48-hour shopping binge. So, what makes this any worse?

Cathy commented, “It just shows that they care more about their bottom line than their employees & I don’t care to support companies that exhibit such corporate greed.”

LAB agreed, writing: “Extending hours by a few hours is OK. Being open all night is not. That just shows me that these stores don’t care about their employees and I will not support that.”

However, retailers are businesses — it’s no secret that they’re in it for the money. We won’t know how successful this move is until January, but I have the feeling they wouldn’t be open unless they were confident it would give them a holiday boost over the competition.

Also, for those who like to work extra hours around November and December, these businesses are providing that opportunity. I hate the idea of folks spending their holidays working but that’s not the case here. The stores will close on the evening of Christmas Eve.

Reader RM made an argument similar to this, writing: “Cathy, more hours equal more jobs, just what we need in this economy. Why shouldn’t stores be focused on profits? They are not in the charity business. Profits equal more jobs. For some people late night work hours better fit their schedule. I would like to see stores open earlier year around. 9 a.m. would be good, 10 a.m. and half the day is gone.”

Shopping at crazy hours has even become a tradition for many. Members of my family love heading out to Walmart after a food-filled Thanksgiving Day.

Though I won’t be at the mall past midnight or before 9 a.m., it doesn’t mean others won’t go. And if people want to work the hours, why not let them?

If we want the brick-and-mortar retail world to stick around, it has to come up with its own ways to stand out.

If you’re venturing out to shop this weekend, tell me about your experience. Join the conversation on the Shoptimist blog at blogs.roanoke.com/shoptimist.

Sunday Insert Preview

The big news this weekend is the extended hours some stores will have, which you can read about in my column tomorrow. Of course, this is the last shopping weekend before Christmas, so there are still some good deals out there.

CVS Makeup Clearance

While making my usual trip to CVS this past weekend I saw something very exciting: makeup clearance.

Avid CVS shoppers may remember this from the past. Throughout the beauty department there are little stickers everywhere offering 25% to 75% off select products. This adds up to huge savings, especially if you have coupons to stack with the discounts.

Tons of popular brands were included in the sale. A few I noticed were Physicians Formula, Revlon, Covergirl, Dove, Herbal Essences and Sally Hansen.

I made some purchases that I would usually consider big splurges: Nexxus hair products and Organix lotion. The lotion even had a coupon for $2 off attached to the bottle.

This sale and the selection will vary by store, but it’s definitely worth checking out. You could find some awesome stocking stuffers or gifts to hold on to for later.

If you find some great deals, tell me about them in the comments section below.

Stores are staying open later (or not closing at all) until Christmas — does that really help you?

Black Friday is no longer the only day you can shop in the wee hours of the morning. How do you feel about extended holiday shopping hours? | Stock photo

Black Friday was just the start of stores opening at crazy hours to compete for sales over the holiday season.

Toys R Us is currently open until midnight Monday through Thursday and until 1 a.m. Friday through Sunday. Macy’s is taking it a step further and plans to be open for 48 hours straight the weekend before Christmas. And those are just a couple examples of the extended holiday hours that you can find.

Now, I’m curious — does that really help you at all? Is it more or less likely to attract your business?
Will you be one of the shoppers browsing Macy’s at 3 a.m. on Dec. 22, or loading up a bike at Toys R Us at 12:45 a.m. this weekend?

Tell me how you feel about these late-night shopping hours in the comments section below. I may be able to use your input in a future column.

Last Elizabeth Arden Sale before Christmas: Today through Dec. 22

The Elizabeth Arden warehouse in Roanoke is hosting one last sale before the holiday season comes to an end.

Today through Dec. 22 you can shop for makeup, fragrances and more — I’ve found makeup/travel bags there in the past, as well as some nice totes and gift sets. It’s a great place to get cologne for men, too.

The hours of the sale are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.

The warehouse is located at 3030 Nicholas Ave., Roanoke. Click the map below for directions:

BBB’s Guide to Gift Card Giving

I gave a warning about purchasing gift cards in my column a while back, and here’s some more information courtesy of the Better Business Bureau.

BBB’s Guide to Gift Card Giving

11/27/2012

With the holiday season in full swing, many shoppers are looking for the best gift options for family and friends. Gift cards may seem like a simple solution, but BBB Serving Western VA is warning that some gift cards could carry high fees making them far from a good deal.

The Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility and Disclosure (CARD) Act http://www.whitehouse.gov/the_press_office/Fact-Sheet-Reforms-to-Protect-American-Credit-Card-Holders, which took effect in 2010, established standards that give consumers additional protections when using gift cards. The standards prohibit retailers from:

  • Setting expiration dates less than five years after the card is purchased; and
  • Charging dormancy, inactivity, and service fees unless the card has not been used for at least 12 months. If fees are charged after this period, the details of such fees must be clearly disclosed on the card.

These standards apply to store gift cards and general use prepaid cards, which are often branded by payment networks such as Visa, MasterCard and American Express.

But there are some details the CARD Act doesn’t cover. For example, issuers can still charge fees every time the card is used, the balance is checked, a replacement card is requested or when customer service is called.

BBB recommends the follow tips before buying a gift card:

  • Research before you buy. Buy from a known and trusted source. Research businesses at bbb.org to see a company’s BBB Business Review. Avoid online auction sites, because the cards sold there could be counterfeit or obtained fraudulently.
  • Read the fine print. Fully understand how the card works, if there are any fees associated with buying or using the card and if any fees will be deducted from the card after it is purchased.
  • Inspect the card before buying. Verify that protective stickers have not been removed and the PIN Number on the back of the card is not exposed. Report any damaged cards to the store selling the cards.
  • Provide receipt with gift card. Give the recipient of the gift card the original receipt in case the card is lost, stolen or there is a discrepancy with the balance.

If you need more information, contact the BBB at (540) 342-3455 or (800) 533-5501. You can also visit www.bbb.org. Follow us on Twitter at twitter.com/BBB_WesternVA.

South Roanoke shops get in holiday spirit with open house

Lauren Ellerman has a vivid childhood memory of singing in a choir with her brother during Christmastime at a men’s clothing shop. She recalls her parents browsing for gifts while local families did their own holiday shopping, and everyone seeming so happy and spirited.

This is exactly the scene Ellerman, 33, is trying to recreate during the inaugural South Roanoke Holiday Open House from 6 to 9 p.m. on Monday.

During the event, locally owned shops and restaurants on Crystal Spring Avenue in Roanoke will offer discounts on food, beverages, clothing, jewelry and housewares. Ellerman herself is one of the owners of The River & Rail Restaurant, so she has a direct interest in inspiring folks to shop local this season.

Ellerman explained, “One of the major focuses of our restaurant is supporting local farmers. Supporting local [business] is one of the cornerstones of our own business, so it made sense to have our neighborhood support all of its local shops.”

There are 10 participants in the open house, all offering a variety of deals. Shoppers can get these special offers by purchasing a coupon book for $15 at any participating location now through the evening of the event.

The deals include:

* Garland’s on Crystal Spring: 10 percent off total purchase (except for Barbour brand) during the event.

* The River & Rail Restaurant: $50 gift certificates for $40 during the event.

* Fork in the Alley: Free s’more with the purchase of an entrée during the event, and $5 off a $20 purchase until Jan. 15.

* Tinnell’s Finer Foods: Half-off a pound of Benton’s Bacon until Jan. 1.

* The Second Yard: 10 percent off framed art and lamps during the event.

* Goldsmith’s Jewelers: Free cleaning and inspection of jewelry during the event and a $50 gift certificate for $25 (must be redeemed by Dec. 31).

* 7-Eleven: $10 off a case of wine and a free small Slurpee during the event.

* Bubblecake: Cupcake cards offering five cupcakes for $10 during the event.

* Stedman House Interior Design: 10 percent off during the event.

* Eric Fitzpatrick: The artist will be selling paintings in the Stedman House Building during the event.

It’s not all about the shopping, though. Ticket proceeds will benefit Family Promise of Greater Roanoke, of which Ellerman is a board member. The organization provides shelter to homeless families.

“The basis of Christmas is ‘there’s no room at the inn,’ and here we are providing shelter to people who need it,” Ellerman said.

If the event is held in the future another charity may be chosen, but the partnership seemed fitting and the selection was supported by other participants of the event this year.

So far, the response from participating businesses and neighborhood residents has been positive.

“Grandin has a wonderful holiday parade, Old Southwest has the parlor tour, downtown has Dickens — I thought it was about time for South Roanoke to do something neat for our neighborhood. I hope folks from all neighborhoods will come,” Ellerman said.

If the event is successful, she plans to hold it again next year.

For now, Ellerman is just hoping the finished product resembles that memory from her childhood.

“Next year I really need to get some cute kids singing I guess, to really make it complete.

Bargains abound as the big day nears

Black Friday has come and gone, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t bargains to be found. You still have 24 more shopping days until Christmas to find a little something for everyone. Here are some tips for making it through the holidays, and beyond, while still saving money.

Add items to your online shopping cart and step away. Some retailers will recognize that you’ve left items in your cart and send a coupon code as an incentive to close the deal. I most recently experienced this with Pottery Barn.

Be wary of rebate offers. Rebates often require the purchase receipt and a UPC code to be mailed in, which would ruin the product’s packaging. If the item is a gift, that could be a problem if it needed to be returned. Look into what’s required before springing for a rebate deal and always ask for a duplicate receipt if you do make the purchase.

Shop around for gift cards. Even though many stores, like Kroger and Walmart, offer gift cards to various restaurants, stores and online services they’re not always the best deal. Occasionally Target and CVS offer rewards or discounts on gift card purchases.
Some stores and restaurants offer incentives, like additional free gift cards, if you purchase them at the brick-and-mortar location. For example, Outback Steakhouse is offering a free $20 bonus card for each $100 purchased in gift cards.
It’s also possible to find discounts on gift cards online. Best Buy.com has offered discounted iTunes gift cards in the past.

Keep all of your receipts in one place. There’s nothing worse than having to return an item and not get the full purchase price back because the receipt went missing. Find a system that works for you.

You’re not safe if you only buy gift cards. It’s wise to hold onto those receipts as well in case there’s an issue redeeming the cards.

If you do happen to lose a receipt, check the store’s return policy. Some retailers, like Lowe’s, can look up the purchase with the credit card merchandise was bought with.

Research offers from your bank and credit card. Many banks and credit companies offer incentives during the holidays for extra cash back or discounts. You’re not always automatically enrolled, but can be as simple as calling or clicking to sign up. I recently received an offer for discounted hotels and airfare from Bank of America.

Look out for frauds. My rule: If a deal seems too good to be true it probably is. This is especially true with online shopping, but can be a problem in retail as well. Research companies before you make a purchase and if possible speak to a real person before you hand over any information.

There’s no shame in coupons. Just because you’re buying a gift doesn’t mean you can’t save as much as possible. Use coupons, daily deals, store rewards and any other discounts you come across. The recipient will enjoy his or her spoils no matter the cost.

Beware of flash sales. Yes, some of these are great deals — but not all of them. If a sale is timed or warns of “limited quantities” our first instinct is to snatch it up. Research all of the items on your shopping list in advance so you know what a good price is and you could avoid paying too much during a “sale.” There’s also a lot of fine print that can be attached to these deals, so research the return policy, shipping costs and any additional fees before you commit.

Consider freebies with purchase, but don’t let those seal the deal. Some freebies are worth it, while others are a decoy. A free $20 gift card with the purchase of a product could be used for more shopping or as an additional gift. Free products with purchase, like free games with the purchase of a game system, are often items with little value. You may not be getting a deal in that case.

Take store rewards into account. If there’s not a better offer available, buying gift cards at Kroger for four times the gas points (available at most stores through Dec. 9) is a good deal. If you’re an avid Walgreens or CVS shopper, buying gift cards at those retailers that are accompanied with big ExtraBucks or Balance Rewards can pay off in the long run.

Use common sense and be a smart shopper. Don’t stress over pennies and don’t shop around so much you run out of time. The holidays are about being around friends and family more than anything, even though finding the perfect gift can feel pretty fantastic, too.

What’s your best tip for making it through the holiday shopping season?
