The Drew Expo opened last night at the Roanoke Civic Center. The event features tons of rides for the family and is free to get in, plus there are a few opportunities to save on ride tickets.

Unlimited rides are $20 per person except for Saturday after 4 p.m. and all day Sunday.  Unlimited rides are only $15 with a coupon from any Stop In Food Store.

Regular tickets are sold in coupon booklets ranging  from $10 to $50. The $10 booklet contains 10 tickets. Since most rides require three to four tickets, if you plan to ride multiple rides the unlimited ride ticket is the way to go — especially if you get your coupon from Stop In.

If you’re considering enrolling the kids in swimming lessons this summer check out this event at Green Ridge Recreation Center on Saturday (May 11).

Red Cross Certified instructors will be on site and offering free 30-minute swimming lessons beginning at 9 a.m. Pre-registration for this event is required, so call 777-6303 to get your child’s name on the list. This is a great opportunity to test the water, if you will, before making a commitment to pay for lessons.

50 ways to please an egg hunt lover

Colorful easter eggs

As a kid, I loved Easter egg hunts.

Running around outside in the early spring weather, or inside if it was rainy spring weather, hunting for brightly colored eggs was always exciting.

On Easter morning, the bunny always stuffed my eggs with some chocolate and special treats, but the egg hunts were all about who could gather the most — bragging rights were very important, as most of the time those eggs were empty.

However, if you’re hosting an egg hunt and want to add a few surprises, here’s a list of 50 fun egg fillers that cost less than $5.

Throwing a successful, and affordable, party without breaking the rules of etiquette

Over time I’ve come to realize that kids’ parties aren’t as simple as they used to be.

For many of my birthdays in June my mom invited all of my friends to come hang out at the local pool. Given some Popsicles, soda and cake (sugar high, anyone?), we were set for the afternoon. There was no way I could have talked my parents into an extravagant sweet 16 party, a la the recent MTV series “My Super Sweet 16.”

Simple parties can still be memorable, especially for the younger age groups. I spoke to Donna Dilley, the local area

director for the National League of Junior Cotillions, for some tips on how to throw an affordable party while still following the rules of party etiquette.

Invitations

While paper invitations are being used less and less today, Dilley likes the classic invites as opposed to digital eCards. And physical cards don’t have to be expensive.

Have a set party budget and let your child help you pick out invitations or make their own. Check out dollar stores, clearance sections and craft stores’ card stock, which can be easily decorated with scrapbooking materials. Postcard invitations are usually cheaper and also save on postage costs.

Donna Dilley

If you’re not up for inviting your child’s whole class, which can lead to overstimulation and overspending, Dilley recommends following a simple formula: age of the child plus one. Mailing out paper invitations will also help avoid disappointment from children who were not invited.

Favors

Party favors are not essential, but they can be built in to the activities for children.

“Favors are a nice thing to have to send the guest home with, but they don’t need to be a necessity. You can build your favor into the activities you’re doing at the party — decorate your own cake, paint a picture, make a picture frame, bead your own necklace,” Dilley said.

Once the kids are through with the activity it will be time to go and they can head out with their homemade swag.

Some other affordable party crafts include cookie decorating, pizza making and model making. Have some of the basics done before the kids arrive, like baking the cookies or buying pre-made pizza dough.

Not only will these party favors keep partygoers occupied, they can be more affordable and better quality than toy trinkets and candy.

Food

The party activities that involve food can also help you knock out two expenses with one: You’ll need fewer snacks and have your favors taken care of. If it’s an afternoon or midmorning party, Dilley says you don’t need to feel pressured to provide a meal.

“Providing something salty, something sweet, like cake, and drinks is sufficient,” she said.

If you are having a party during meal time, keep it simple. Stick to finger foods that are easy for kids to eat and that a majority of kids have a taste for, like chicken nuggets, pizza, simple sandwiches, veggies, fruit and pretzels or chips.

If you opt to pick up food from a restaurant, like pizza or party trays, always search for a coupon or call ahead to see if they are offering a special group deal.

Extras

If you’re throwing the party at a location where certain children may want to enjoy additional activities, such as Chuck E. Cheese’s, parents should be prepared cover any extra costs. There’s no need to go over budget to provide supplementary tokens, food or treats outside of what you planned to offer.

“Parents should be mindful that hosts are on a limited budget, and it can be a learning opportunity for kids to be thankful for what’s provided,” Dilley said.

Gifts

When it comes time for kids to open gifts, it’s important to take note of who gave what for thank-you cards.

If there are gift duplicates, consider donating the duplicates to charity (another great teaching opportunity), passing them on to a younger sibling or, depending on your relationship with the gift giver, explaining the situation and asking for a gift receipt.

If the children are too young to be able to share the new gifts, hold them to be opened until after guests leave, Dilley suggested.

Thank yous

Thank-you cards seem to be on the verge of extinction, but that doesn’t mean they’re not important.

“As soon as they’re able to write, you can start teaching them about being thankful about the things in their life and how to be considerate to others,” Dilley said.

Like invitations, thank-you postcards can save on postage or kids can make their own.

I like the idea of taking a group photo at the party and creating a photo postcard that can double as a party favor and a thank-you note. Stores like CVS, Target, Walgreens, Sam’s Club and Walmart all offer affordable photo services. It’s possible to find coupons for prints, as well.

Budgeting is important

Throwing a party doesn’t have to be expensive, but it’s a good idea to get the kids involved in the planning to help them learn about the value of things. Getting everyone together to celebrate can be a special experience in itself.

“I think the most memorable parties are when the children can sit down and be in a hands-on activity,” Dilley said. “It could be cooking together or making your own jewelry or putting together some type of model.”

The most important thing to remember is to stick to your budget. Think back to the stories other parents have told about kids playing with the cardboard boxes their expensive toys came in, rather than the toys themselves — kids can always find a way to be entertained.

What tips do you have for throwing a successful kid’s party?

Having an affordable and adorable baby shower

I had my first experience throwing a baby shower a couple of weeks ago.

I was totally new to this scene — it’s the first baby expected among my immediate family and friends. The pressure of hosting can be overwhelming with so much involved — money, food, gifts, invitations — especially when you’re in unfamiliar territory.

While I’m extremely frugal, I’m also a stickler for detail, so I had a crash course in throwing an affordable and adorable baby shower. With a little research and the help of my co-host — my mother — we were able to put together a great party.

The theme of the shower was jungle animals, coinciding with the prints in the baby boy’s room. After browsing Etsy, Pinterest and Google, my brain was filled with easy ideas.

Here’s what I settled on, and how I managed to cut corners.

Food

At parties, folks tend to be attracted to the foods that are familiar, yet tasty, so that’s what we stuck with.

Ham biscuits, chicken salad croissants, veggies and dip, fruit salad and a pasta salad were on the menu. What made this affordable menu even better was the fact that all of these dishes could be made in advance, saving us a headache on the day of the shower.

For dessert, we served carrot cake cupcakes, the mom-to-be’s favorite, topped with icing and an animal cracker. The easy cake toppers fit the theme perfectly and didn’t cut into our budget. Consider looking for similar pre-made goodies that can accentuate your homemade treats.

Invitations and decor

The invitations and decorations took the most research. We expected just 14 people at the shower, so buying invitations, plates and napkins in bulk was out of the question. We wouldn’t really be saving anything if there were dozens of paper goods left over.

After considering a few products that could be personalized or pre-printed, we finally settled on some sale-priced Hallmark goods from Shindigz.com. Plates, napkins, tablecloths, a banner, invitations and thank-you cards were all purchased for under $40, and they all matched. Providing thank-you cards for the shower recipient is a nice perk if you can find some that fit the bill.

Favors

My mother is an ambitious lady to say the least, and she chose to tackle the feat of providing each of our guests with a box of homemade truffles. She found a simple recipe with simple ingredients, and we ended up with an attractive and delicious favor.

Plain truffle boxes can be purchased at most craft stores, and we chose to line the plain boxes with gold leaf papers. Because we weren’t providing favors for a big crowd, it was an affordable option, but this could turn into a pricey venture. Michaels, A.C. Moore and Jo-Ann Fabric & Craft stores have coupons in the newspaper and online almost weekly. These can lead to big savings if your merchandise is eligible.

One of our best finds was the stickers we used to secure the truffle boxes.

I found a seller on Etsy who offered jungle-themed stickers that could be personalized. I ordered 24 stickers with “Thank you!” printed on them for merely $10 — a bargain for a custom product.

Etsy has endless possibilities in the realm of custom paper products, and there’s something for every budget. Many sellers even offer a print-at-home option.

Luckily, these things were the most we had to worry about. There was a request to leave games off the itinerary, which also saved some money.

The location was free because it was held in the mom-to-be’s home. This ended up being a great plan, as she didn’t have to load all her loot into the car when the party was over. Cleanup was also a breeze because we purchased all paper and plastic products, and all of our food could be put right back into the refrigerator.

Consider these cool summer reading programs for kids

Not too long ago I was in school and feeling the pangs of horror that came along with summer reading projects: The seemingly million pages of reading followed by book reports thrown together in the closing weeks of summer.

Those projects still exist, but so do summer reading programs that reward kids with free stuff. Cool summer reading programs? They’re out there. Here are a few to consider:

Local libraries have summer reading programs that are usually filled with guest speakers, performers, movies, crafts, food and more. Check out the programs in Roanoke, Botetourt and Roanoke counties, and the New River Valley to see which program suits you. There’s a lot to choose from and it’s all free.

Barnes & Noble rewards kids who complete their summer reading program with a free book. The appeal of reading seems to go up when kids get to pick out their own material — dare I say they may even be excited?

Go online and download the Summer Reading Kit from barnesandnoble.com. Then, have your child read eight books and record them in the Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Imagination’s Destination Journal.

Kids who finish the eight books by Sept. 4 and bring in the completed journal to a local store can pick out a book from the list printed on the back of the journal. There are options for students from first through sixth grade.

The kit also includes optional activities for kids to complete as they read.

Chuck E. Cheese will reward kids who complete two weeks of reading with 10 free game tokens. Download the Reading Rewards Calendar from www.chuckecheese.com and mark off each day completed with a sticker. Redeem a completed calendar by Dec. 31 to receive free tokens.

The Scholastic Summer Challenge is encouraging kids to read a little every day. Kids can sign on, create a screen name and then start logging their reading time. The program sets a weekly goal, and if it’s reached, kids will receive free downloads and online badges for their Scholastic profile. There are also opportunities to enter to win autographed copies of books and other prizes.

The Pizza Hut BOOK IT! reading program is asking kids to read five books by Aug. 15. Kids in kindergarten through sixth grade who complete the challenge and mail in a completed entry form from www.bookitprogram.com will be entered to win a “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” prize package that includes books, DVDs, toys and a $20 Visa gift card.

These family-friendly flicks won’t break the bank

Watching movies together is a great family-friendly activity, but catching new releases at the theater each week gets expensive fast — multiple tickets, popcorn, drinks and candy, and you’re probably spending at least $50.

Luckily, during the summer throughout the Roanoke Valley you have a lot of ways to get the family into a flick without the hefty price tag.

Summer Movie Express

This is a nine-week festival at participating Regal Cinemas (the Christiansburg and Roanoke locations are participating) with select G and PG rated movies shown for $1 on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings at 10. This program begins June 12.

A portion of proceeds will be donated to the Will Rogers Institute. For more information, including the movie schedule, visit www.regmovies.com/summermovieexpress/.

Looney Tunes Summer

The Grandin Theatre presents Looney Tunes Cartoon Summer on Fridays and Saturdays from June through August. These cartoons are free and begin at 10 a.m. each day, and the Friday show will be repeated Saturday. This series begins June 15.

Free two-year LEGO Magazine subscription

There are a few young men in my life who absolutely love LEGOs. If you’re in the same boat, check out this cool freebie.

Click here and you can sign up your child, nephew, niece, etc. for a free two year subscription to LEGO magazine.

Hands-on gifts will touch Mom’s heart

There’s just something about seeing tiny handprints that mothers love.

Maybe it’s the way that they freeze time, or maybe it’s the endless amount of crafts that can be made with handprints and just a few supplies.

With Mother’s Day coming up on Sunday, giving her a homemade gift that’ll be a keepsake is one way to include the kids in making Mom’s day special. There’s a lot more to make out of handprints than Thanksgiving turkeys. Here are a few suggestions for hands-on Mother’s Day gifts.

Courtesy of The Craft Crow.

Wreath: Pick out a few springy colors of construction paper to transform this classic Christmas activity.

Cut out handprints, arrange them in a circle with the fingers facing outward and glue them together. Layer the handprints for a fuller wreath, or stick to a single circle if you’re working with especially small hands. To accent the wreath add a bow or let the kids draw their own special doodles on the hands.

Canvas: Plain canvases can be perked up by allowing your child to take hold of them.

Paint the canvas a solid color and let it dry. Then, paint your child’s hand a

contrasting color and have them leave a print. A single handprint in the middle is eye-catching, but smaller kids would also enjoy making a collage of prints in various colors on a single canvas. You also could have everyone in the household make their own canvas and create a family tree of prints.

A nice size canvas for this project is 10-by-10 inches, and the canvas boards will only cost you about $6 apiece.

Frames: A similar project can be done with construction paper, paint and picture frames.

Courtesy of Cafe Press.

Cut the paper to the size of a frame — 4-by-6 inches or 5-by-7 inches work best — and place a handprint in the center. Using dark paper and metallic paint is an easy way to embellish the simple project. Once the paint is dry, place the paper in the frame and wrap it up for Mom.

Totes: Canvas tote bags are simple gifts that can be easily customized by children, plus you can find them at craft stores for about $5.

With some fabric paint, handprints can be left in designs, such as flowers (you’ll need to paint a dot in the center and a stem), caterpillars (upside down handprints in a row with a plain circle as the head),

Courtesy of paintcutpaste.com.

or as single prints with your child’s name and the year underneath. This is one of the more functional crafts that kids can create and it’s sure to embarrass them down the road when Mom is still carrying the bag.

Flowerpot: Flowers are a classic Mother’s Day gift, but you can make this gift a little more personal by letting your child paint the flowerpot. Leaving a contrasting handprint with the date written underneath adds character and creates an instant keepsake.

Courtesy of celebrations.com.

In lieu of flowers, kids can cut out construction-paper handprints, attach them to straws and stand them up in the pot. A grown-up or sibling can help them by writing things they love about Mom on each hand. When she’s ready to use the pot for planting, Mom can remove the hand “flowers” and have a bouquet.

Kitchen accessories: For moms who love to cook, a personalized set of dish towels, potholders or an apron could be the perfect gift. You just need some fabric paint.

For an apron, consider making the handprints “flowers” and let the kids paint stems from the bottom of the apron up. Use a paint pen or permanent marker to add the date and/or names if desired. Look for towels or potholders in the

Courtesy of classroomtalk.com.

clearance section, where you usually can find them for $5 or less. Plain aprons can be found at craft stores for $10 or less.

Kids don’t stay little for long, so moms are sure to love these gifts that will remind them how small their children once were.

Do you still have handprint crafts from when your kids were young? What’s your favorite handprint craft for kids?

Get crafty with the kids without going broke

They say “April showers bring May flowers,” but what do you do with the kids on rainy days?

And how about the sweltering summer days, which seem to have come early this year?

When I was a kid, I remember spending many of those days making simple but fun crafts. Getting crafty with the kids inside doesn’t have to be expensive — or messy. In fact, you can create some fantastic original artwork and treats with items you probably have in your home.

Tie-dyeing shirts can be labor-intensvie, and possibly expensive when you have to buy multiple colors. A great alternative is dying pieces of clothing with permanent markers and rubbing alcohol. Kids will love this because they can pick out their own marker colors and help with each step.

Lay your shirt over a cup and place a rubber band around the base, creating a tight, round surface. Choose where you want your design to start and make a circle of 6 dots using whatever colors you like. Using a spray bottle or eye dropper, apply rubbing alcohol to the middle of the circle and watch the colors spread. Between 10 and 15 sprays/drops is the most you need for each circle. Let the alcohol dry and wash your creation before wearing it.

After trying this project myself, I decided I would definitely use at least two colors on each circle in the future. I’d also put more thought into the placement of my circles. I absolutely loved this project though. It’s almost identical to real tie-dye with much less mess.

When I was growing up, we had buckets and zip-top bags filled with small, broken pieces of crayons. No one ever wanted to use the leftovers, but it seemed silly to throw them away. While browsing Pinterest.com one day, I saw this technique for making your old crayons new again.

Peel any remaining paper off of each crayon and toss them in a lined muffin pan. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees, place the pan in the oven, turn off the heat and let the crayons sit until melted (about 15 minutes). Then, place the pan in the freezer for about an hour. The liners will lift out easily when they’re solid. The end product is a bigger crayon that kids can be excited about using again.

When I did this project, I used paper pan liners, but some of the wax seeped out. To avoid ruining your pans, I would recommend layering three paper liners or using aluminum pan liners.

If you think you’ll be doing this project often, consider investing in a silicon pan (about $10). By using silicon, you can avoid using pan liners and they are available in shapes. However, if you don’t use pan liners or choose a silicon pan, the pan can no longer be used for cooking because a waxey residue remains on the pan after the crayons are removed. For some of the upcycled crayons, I mixed various colors. But the ones that turned out best were those with pieces from the same color family. Kids probably would love both.

Once you’ve got your new crayons, go online and print off some free coloring pages. Disney Family Fun (familyfun.go.com) always has a great selection of seasonal printables, both coloring and game pages. You can find more free pages online by searching for “free printable coloring pages.”

Newspaper hats are a classic craft for kids, but what about your girly girls? Try making newspaper flowers out of the comics page and attaching them to a headband or barrette.

Cut out a circle from your newspaper and then cut a spiral shape from the circle, leaving a base in the center. Roll up the spiral from the outside edge and then let it loosen over the base. When you have the look you want, hot-glue the “petals” to your base piece. These flowers can be glued directly onto your clips or headband, or easily attached with pipe cleaners for a temporary accessory.

You could try this with colorful magazine paper as well.

There are tons of crafts that can be easily made with coffee filters, tissue boxes, rubber bands and watercolors, below are some examples:
Milk jug Easter baskets (also would make great buckets for the beach!)
Music makers
Rock paperweights
Coffee filter butterfly
Coffee filter sunflowers
Tissue box dinosaur feet

If you have a preschooler in your household (a little one ages 3 to 5) and you are a Virginia resident, then Busch Gardens Williamsburg has a great offer for you.

Now through Oct. 28 parents can request a free Sesame Street Forest of Fun Preschool Pass to Busch Gardens. This pass normally sells for $120, and with it your child will get unlimited admission to the park (when accompanied by a paying adult, of course).

Toy coupons galore

These are some of the familiar brand names you can save on when you sign up for the Hasbro daily deals. Graphic by Hasbro.

Toys can be expensive, but it’s easier to save on them than you might think. I’ve come across a bunch of toy coupons lately, and if you combine them with a sale at Toys R Us, Target or other retailers you can save a bundle.

Hasbro has over $125 worth of coupons available now on their website. Just enter your email address and they’ll send you new deals every day through Feb. 29.

Coupons.com frequently has toy and DVD coupons available. Scroll through the pages each month so you don’t miss out. Also consider testing out various zip codes. Different areas could get different coupons each month.
Currently you can use the zip code 34102 and find $70 in Fisher Price coupons.

Barbie and Hot Wheels are not only offering you coupons, but the chance to give your input on their products.
Click here and you can submit a new design for Barbie. Enter the code FASHION to get started, and you’ll be rewarded with a coupon good for $5 off your next Barbie purchase. Your design will also be submitted and could be chosen to be one of Barbie’s next outfits in Walmart stores.
Click here to vote on which Hot Wheels you think should be released next. Once you’ve made your selection, you’ll be rewarded with a coupon good for $5 off your next Hot Wheels purchase. Your custom Hot Wheels pack could end up being sold at Walmart stores, too!

Leapfrog is offering a printable coupon on their website now good for $3 off any Tag Book priced $9.99 or more. I know these books are hot right now and they’re a great way to make reading a little more entertaining for kids who are just starting out. This coupon is good through March 31.

Free Valentine’s printables

Need a last minute card, or just want a holiday craft for the kids? Check out these Valentine’s themed printables.

Disney Junior will let your child design their own card here for free. They can add a message and “stickers” of some of their favorite Disney characters, and then choose to send the Valentine via email or print it.

Little Jedis will love these free Star Wars printable Valentine’s. These cards cannot be emailed, but do come with a template for printable envelopes as well.

These are just a couple I found and chose to point out since the characters are so popular. With a Google search you can find an endless supply of printables.

Various printable coupons and a freebie from Pullups

If anyone is about to take on potty training with their child, click here to order a free interactive potty training DVD from Pullups. The description says the DVD will help you ”discover techniques, tips, songs and games to help you and your child succeed.” I think anything that can make this process easier, especially a freebie, is great.

Bath & Body Works is offering $10 off of a $30 purchase now through Nov. 20 with this printable coupon or the code TENSHIP online. Bath & Body is a great place to stock up on Christmas gifts, so remember to print this coupon before heading to the mall.

Sweet deals for Halloween

Looking for a new twist on carving pumpkins? Check out Disney's FamilyFun.com for tons of free and cheap ideas.

Between buying costumes, bags of candy, pumpkins and decorations, the costs associated with Halloween can add up quick. Here are some money-saving ideas to help you celebrate this year:

* Check consignment stores, thrift stores and online retailers for costumes. Generally kids only get one year’s use out of a costume, so even if you buy a used one it can be practically new.

Websites like eBay are a great place to look for costumes, and fall brings about tons of local consignment sales. The LFA Kids Consignment Event is happening in the CMT Building on Brandon Avenue in Roanoke through Sunday.

 * I’m admittedly not the best at carving pumpkins, so paper stencils are a lifesaver. Stores often stock stencil kits, which are handy if you need carving tools. However, if you have kept your tools from previous kits, consider printing your own stencils. Many websites have simple designs you can print for free.
Click here for free Pumpkin Masters stencils.
Click here for pumpkin carving ideas and stencils by Disney’s FamilyFun.com.

IHOP has a tasty way to celebrate Halloween. Throughout the month of October you can find pumpkin pancakes, All-You-Can-Eat Buttermilk pancakes and Scary Face Pancakes on the menu (starting at $4.99).

Then, on Oct. 28 from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., there will be a day-long celebration Scary Face Pancake give-away for trick-or-treaters 12 and under. Kids will receive one free Count Spatula Scary Face Pancake — an oversized buttermilk pancake with a whipped topping mouth and strawberry nose served with two mini Oreo cookies and candy corn on the side (allowing kids to create their own Halloween hotcake), during the give-away.

 * If you like a little spooky background noise at your Halloween party or for visiting trick-or-treaters, check out the mp3 downloads on Amazon. They have numerous Halloween mixes in the $5 to $9 range, and even a few free downloads (just remember that Amazon’s pricing can change at any time).

* Holiday-themed crafts are always a hit with kids. Print out some free Halloween coloring and activity pages throughout the month, or check out websites like Disney’s FamilyFun.com to get ideas for simple and cheap Halloween crafts. My favorite crafts on the website are the super simple “bat-o’-lanterns.”

Click here for an easy and cheap Toilet Paper Pumpkin craft.
Click here for the free eBook “11 Easy Halloween Craft Ideas: Halloween Decorations to Make for Your Home.”

* Both McDonald’s and Wendy’s have Halloween coupon books available for only $1. Inside you’ll find coupons for all kinds of free goodies — hamburgers, apple slices, ice cream and juice or milk at McDonald’s and five free Frostys at Wendy’s.

 * Keep any eye out for online daily deals for Halloween stores and websites (next year, start watching for these beginning in mid-September).

Totsy (a daily deal site for children’s products) and Plum District (a daily deal site dedicated to mothers) have both had recent deals on costumes. These deals usually save you at least 50 percent off of the retail price.

* Saturday is National Costume Swap Day, and there’s a related event here in the Roanoke Valley.

Bring your gently used costumes to the LFA Consignment Sale mentioned above today or Thursday, and you’ll receive a swap ticket. Then, on Saturday visit the sale again from 9 to 11 a.m. and you can pick out your free costume. You must have a swap ticket to attend this portion of the sale.
