Planet Fitness Mother’s Day/Breast Cancer Sale

Mother’s Day might be over, but this promotion from Planet Fitness will continue through Wednesday (May 15). Here are the details I received from the fitness center:

Join participating Planet Fitness locations in Roanoke, Lynchburg, Harrisonburg and Midlothian from May 8th-15th for just $10 down and then only $10 a month; initial enrollment fee donated to support the cause. Submit nominations for the “Mom Nom” Best Mom on the Planet sweepstakes for the chance to win a year membership at Planet Fitness

Roanoke, VA (May 8, 2013) – This Mother’s Day, $10 never meant so much. Planet Fitness, the innovative health club franchise known for its Judgment Free Zone® and friendly prices, today announced that location(s) in Roanoke, Lynchburg, Harrisonburg and Midlothian are sponsoring the brand’s fourth annual Mother’s Day promotion to raise money for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation® (BCRF), an independent not-for-profit organization committed to funding scientific research to achieve prevention and a cure for breast cancer.

In honor of Mother’s Day from May 8th-15th, people can join for just $10 down and then $10 a month, and participating Planet Fitness locations nationwide will donate 100% of enrollment fees ($10 per signup) to BCRF. Over the past three years, Planet Fitness has donated more than $1 million to BCRF, and the company and its franchisees this year hope to surpass previous years’ donations.

“The Breast Cancer Research Foundation is grateful for the support of Planet Fitness in helping BCRF raise both money and awareness, for the fourth year in a row, for BCRF’s lifesaving research efforts that are aimed at prevention and a cure for breast cancer,” said Myra J. Biblowit, BCRF President. “In the U.S. alone, unfortunately every 2.3 minutes a woman will be diagnosed with breast cancer — a mother, a daughter, a sister, a friend. To implement this program during the Mother’s Day holiday is a clear way to make a difference and speak to women across the nation affected by breast cancer at such an alarming rate.”

“We are honored to partner with The Breast Cancer Research Foundation to help provide financial support for such a worthy cause,” said Chris Rondeau, chief executive officer of Planet Fitness. “We are committed to helping better people’s lives, through fitness and giving back to our communities, and with so many grandmothers, mothers and daughters touched by breast cancer, we felt this promotion was the perfect way to honor Mother’s Day.”

In addition, to honor all moms throughout the country, Planet Fitness is hosting a special “Mom Nom” sweepstakes to find the Best Mom on the Planet. From May 8th-15th, people can nominate a special mom by visiting www.PlanetFitness.com/MomNoms and one lucky person will be randomly selected to win a year membership for themselves and a mom of their choice. Currently, there are approximately 650 Planet Fitness clubs nationwide and more than 4.5 million members. To find a Planet Fitness near you or to join online, visit www.PlanetFitness.com. ”

Senior discounts do exist, just be sure to ask

Discounts for senior citizens are fairly common but unfortunately rarely advertised. I had to do some major digging to get details for this column. Often the information wasn’t listed online or posted in shops, so what’s the average consumer supposed to do? I recommend you ask — ask everywhere you do business.

Part of the reason some businesses don’t widely post their discounts or offers for seniors is that they change often or vary by location. Restaurants are the best example of this. Many chain restaurants, both fast food and casual dining, offer a percentage off or free beverages to senior diners, but the deal often depends on the management.

For example, the Dunkin’ Donuts/Baskin Robbins location on Franklin Road in Roanoke offers seniors a 10 percent discount, but other locations, such as Dunkin’ Donuts retailers within WilcoHess gas stations, may not honor the same promotion.

The same is true for Hallmark stores. Locally, Jaclyn’s Hallmark stores offer a 10 percent discount on Tuesdays, but some other shops in the area offer none.

Some restaurants may also have a special menu for seniors. IHOP and Denny’s have a menu for diners age 55 and older that includes a limited number of discounted items.

Retailers generally offer special discounts on a certain day. Belk offers seniors a discount on the first Tuesday of each month. The discount is usually 15 percent, but can vary.

Retail locations that offer weekly deals include C.J. Banks (10 percent off on Wednesdays), Hamrick’s (10 percent off on Tuesdays), Ross (10 percent off on Tuesdays) and Kohl’s (15 percent off on Wednesdays).

By stacking coupons, sale prices and a senior discount, it’s possible to save a bundle on groceries. Local retailer Eats Natural Foods in Blacksburg offers senior shoppers a 15 percent discount. Each Tuesday, Kroger locations offer seniors a 5 percent discount on their total shopping bill.

It’s not necessary to be a member of AARP or AAA to save on travel costs as a senior. Most chain hotels offer discounts to seniors that range from 10 percent to 30 percent. These rates change often and can vary by location. Greyhound offers senior travelers a 5 percent discount on bus fare as well.

If you’re traveling to U.S. national parks, seniors can pick up a lifetime pass for only $10 — a huge discount compared to the $80 annual pass available to the general public. Staying in your own back yard? You can get a variety of discounted passes for Virginia state parks, too.

Movie tickets round out the collection of savings.

Valley View Grande 16 offers senior tickets for $8.50 all day, and Carmike 10 at Tanglewood offers tickets for $7.25 on weekdays or $7.75 on weekends. The prices at other Regal and Carmike theaters in Southwest Virginia, though, may vary.

Locally owned theaters have some promotions, too. The Grandin Theatre in Roanoke and Westlake Cinema in Hardy both offer seniors movie tickets for $7.50 all day. Occasionally, the Buchanan Theatre in Botetourt County has special showings with discounted senior prices.

What other senior discounts have you found around town?  Share your favorite deals.

Haven’t checked on your insurance rates lately? You could save big

carkeys0220While shopping around for car insurance recently I was surprised at how easy it was to rack up discounts.

Consumer Reports says that more than 60 percent of drivers have been with the same insurance carrier for 10 or more years — those are some big numbers. If you haven’t checked on your rates lately it’s worth shopping around because you could save big.

It’s extremely easy to get rate quotes now with the online programs most companies offer. Enter some basic information and you can get a quote instantly.

However, it’s wise to call your local office before making a commitment. Local insurance representatives can often dig up even more savings for you and tailor your plan even more to meet your needs.

Some discounts drivers aren’t aware of include deals for good students, long-time customers, drivers with good records and members of certain clubs, fraternities and societies. Some universities even have a connection to various insurers, so your degree could save you some cash. If you’re willing and able to pay your bill in-full instead of making monthly payments you’ll often get a lower rate, as well.

Another easy way to save is by bundling insurance policies. Keeping all of your policies with one carrier can lead to hefty percentages off your bill.

For example, when I bundled my renter’s insurance and car insurance I saved an additional 20 percent. But compare each of the policies you’re considering bundling before committing — if all of the details of each policy aren’t exactly what you need then a discount may not be worth it.

If you have been a long-time customer and would prefer not to change insurance carriers, it’s still worth a call to your local agent. Your needs can change through the years and you may need more or less coverage in certain areas.

For example, if you have changed jobs and are driving fewer miles per year, you could save a little extra. It never hurts to check in and ask where you could be saving money. Mentioning that you’re shopping around isn’t a bad idea either. At times agents can offer extra discounts to customers who are considering a switch.

Some companies are also coming up with ways to track your driving, which can lead to discounts.

Progressive’s Snapshot program is the most well known. Upon signing up, you’ll receive a device that plugs into your car and tracks your driving habits. The data can be tracked online where you can see projected savings. If you choose to renew your policy those projected savings can become actual savings.

When was the last time you shopped around for insurance? What discounts were you able to track down?

Do you accept JC Penney’s apology?

JC Penney has been a hot topic on this blog for over a year. The store went through drastic changes in early 2012, and then started backpeddling. CEO Ron Johnson was fired, and now former CEO Mike Ullman is back. So are all of the things you missed about JC Penney — the sales, the coupons and the brands.

The store has now gone so far as to release a video apology in an effort to bring back shoppers.

Do you accept the apology?

With the store going back to its old ways, does that mean you’ll start shopping there again? If not, why?

For more information on all the dirty details, this Forbes article does a nice job of summing it all up.

Free cheese fries at Outback Steakhouse today

Is it just me, or do these look even more delicious knowing they'll be free? Photo courtesy of Outback Steakhouse.

Is it just me or do these look even more delicious knowing they’ll be free? Photo courtesy of Outback Steakhouse.

Today and May 9 you can get a free small order of cheese fries with any purchase at Outback Steakhouse. There’s no coupon necessary for this deal, just mention “Thursday FriesDay” to your server.

Enjoy! It’s almost the weekend.

What do the changes at Kroger mean for you?

krogerYesterday Kroger shocked some shoppers when it posted this message on its Facebook page about how the grocer will no longer be doubling coupons:

“In an effort to provide you with the most value for your dollar, we are updating our coupon policy and implementing a New Lower Prices program. Effective May 12, 2013, we are discontinuing our practice of doubling (up to 50 cents) manufacturer coupons in the Mid-Atlantic region. We will continue to accept manufacturer coupons and other coupons at face value, including: digital coupons, e-coupons, …Catalina coupons and printables. We will also be investing additional resources into lowering prices for our customers on everyday items. We understand that this is a significant change. We hope that you come and see our new low prices – as well as the many other ways to save — for yourself.
• Downloadable, clip-free coupons daily on www.kroger.com
• Special sales events such as Mega Event and Cart Busters
• Fuel savings program that offers up to $1 off per gallon at Kroger Fuel Centers
• 10¢ off per gallon gas savings opportunity at participating Shell stations
• Loyal Customer Mailings containing customized coupons.
• $4/$10 generic drug pricing (see Pharmacy for details)”

Amanda Codispoti has more about this announcement and the retailer’s lower prices on the Storefront blog.

I’m interested in knowing what this means for your shopping habits. Will you continue to be a Kroger shopper?

The gas points are still valuable, but is that enough? The digital coupons Kroger is promoting so heavily can’t be combined with manufacturer coupons, unlike the paper store coupons Food Lion offers. Will that encourage you to switch, or is the New Lower Prices program enough to keep your business?

Lately there have been some news stories about the decline of coupons (like this USA Today story). Over the past year coupon values have dropped, the number of coupons available has dropped and the number of coupons redeemed in stores has dropped. If shoppers aren’t using as many coupons, will this change at Kroger be a big deal for shoppers?

Tell me your thoughts in the comments section below.

Spring is here and that means your opportunities to shop are even more plentiful. Yard sales, flea markets, sidewalk sales and open houses are popping up everywhere. Locally, you can count on a few big events year after year and new prospects to explore as well.

Hit the road this weekend or mark your calendars now for these shopping events:

This weekend the J. Crew warehouse in Lynchburg is hosting another sale. The warehouse, at 25 Millrace Drive, will be open today from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. You can find more information and read about my experience at this sale on the blog, or contact the warehouse at 434-316-6324.

This weekend only, the retailer is allowing non-members to shop or try various food samples with no strings attached. Samples will be available from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day, and Roanoke store hours are today from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Current Sam’s Club members may want to steer clear of the store this weekend if possible — it’s going to get crowded.

The Elizabeth Arden Warehouse will host its next sale May 6-11 and May 13-18. This warehouse is located at 3030 Nicholas Ave. in Roanoke, and sale hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Shoppers will find fragrances for men and women, skincare products, makeup and more at this sale. On May 11, North Cross School will host its annual Big Flea event. At this event you can find donated furniture, large appliances, household items and clothing for sale to benefit the school. Kids can also have some fun at this sale by participating in field day events like carnival games, a dunking booth and more. Concessions will be available for purchase. The sale will be held from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and field day activities will be available from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Another flea event that’s being held for a good cause is the 17th Annual Allstate Flea Market and Craft Event to benefit the March of Dimes. This event is also being held on May 11 between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. (the rain date is June 8) outside the Salem Civic Center. Shoppers can usually find between 100 and 150 vendors at this event. Interested in selling? Vendors may rent two parking spaces for a $35 donation or four spaces for a $55 donation. For more information, call 776-6163.

Global Partners in Peace and Development is hosting an event called Proceeds for Poverty May 16-18 at the former Kroger location located on Orange Avenue in Roanoke behind the KFC and Denny’s. Sale hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Global Partners will donate 100 percent of the proceeds from this sale to one of its four causes: clean water wells, small businesses, orphaned children and food programs. Items in good working condition (excluding clothes, entertainment centers and any TVs that are not flat screen) will be collected for the sale May 13-15 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. behind the building. If you are moving or have large furniture or appliances ready to donate now, call Roy Carter at 537-2070 to arrange a pickup. For more information about the sale, visit www.gpartners.org.

This time of year you can also find flea markets at local churches and businesses. Many are submitted to The Roanoke Times at calendar.roanoke.com. Enter “flea” or “sale” in the search bar to find other events.

If you prefer adventuring around town and hitting yard sales all weekend, consider checking out the yard sale map on Roanoke.com. You can plan your route with this nifty tool at yardsales.roanoke.com.

Yard sale hosts may post the address, hours and a short description of what they offer on this page, and you may also get directions to each location. If you’re interested in posting your own yard sale on the map, you may do so at the web address above or by calling 981-3311.

You can also stay up-to-date with the local yard sale scene by signing up for text alerts from The Roanoke Times. Smartphone users can text “yardsales” to 96362 to sign up. Once you’re on the list you’ll receive up to four texts per month with a weekly update about yard sales on the map and a link to the mobile-friendly page (which is: http://bit.ly/ZeruCj).

You can trim costs at the hair salon

HairTo be perfectly honest, I don’t enjoy getting my hair cut.
Even though it’s a necessity of life, I usually get stressed out by the process: making the appointment, blocking out time, worrying if my cut and style will look right, pulling out my debit card for the inevitable bill — it’s just not my favorite way to spend an afternoon.

Luckily, I’ve learned a few ways to cut corners and make the process a little more affordable, and therefore a little more enjoyable.

One positive thing about haircuts is that you truly can pay what you want for them.
Whether you are brazen enough to bring out the trimmers at home or prefer the full salon experience, there’s a price for every budget. Decide what your price-point is and start calling around.
Some salons have different levels of stylists who vary in price. It’s also possible to save by requesting a dry cut (skipping the shampoo). If you’re just looking for a basic trim and not a full cut and style, there could be a price difference, as well.

Most chain locations are significantly cheaper than full-service salons. In between those extremes you’ll find local barbershops and hairdressers that offer a variety of services for a mid-level price. Also, coupons for chain salons are common. They can be found on the backs of grocery receipts, online and in the newspaper.
It’s also possible to find deals for local businesses, though. Salons and beauty shops often offer daily deal vouchers or advertise monthly specials, frequently on their Facebook pages or websites. These deals are great ways to support local businesses, get pampered and save. Keeping an eye out for new salons offering grand opening or seasonal specials (such as back to school) is another option.

Beauty institutes training students often provide affordable services to the public. In most cases, the students have reached a certain point in their education and are closely monitored by instructors while they work. Allowing students to practice on you helps them and can save you 50 percent or more off the cost of a professional salon service.
To get an idea of what’s offered locally, both the Regency Beauty Institute (www.regencybeauty.com) in Roanoke and P.Zaz the School (www.pzaztheschool.com) in Daleville have their services and price lists posted online. You can find other schools by using the Beauty Schools Directory at www.beautyschoolsdirectory.com.

Extending the time between cuts is an easy way to save money. If you have a short hairdo or color your hair, this can be a little more difficult, though.
At-home coloring has come a long way over the years and various brands now sell kits just for root touch-up, which is one way to stretch the time between salon visits. Some women do a daily check for split ends that need to be snipped. This upkeep can help hair look lively between cuts.

Alternating trips between your favorite salon and a more affordable barbershop or chain also is an option. Similarly, you can alternate at-home color with color done by a professional. Both of these options cut costs but still let you enjoy a special treat from time to time.

What’s your favorite tip for saving money on hair care?

Save on Salem Red Sox tickets; find other baseball deals

We’re finally getting some warm weather just in time for the boys of summer to hit the field.

The Salem Red Sox opened its home season Friday night against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, and there’s a long season ahead (the last Sox game will be at home on Sept. 2), so you have plenty of opportunities coming up to catch a game.

What makes the start of baseball season even more exciting is that there are lots of ways to save on game tickets and lots of freebies to be earned.

Advance & flex plans

The simplest way to save a few bucks is to buy individual game tickets in advance. Any ticket purchased at least 24 hours before a game is $2 off. That makes premium seats $10, box seats $8 and general admission seats $6. There’s also a $1 discount off the walk-up price (which is $12 for premium seats, $10 for box seats and $8 for general admission seats) for kids 12 and younger or senior citizens 65 and older.

Anyone planning to go to multiple games throughout the season should consider purchasing one of two 10-game Flex Plans available.

The 10th Man Flex Plan is $60 and includes 10 general admission game tickets and your choice of one $5 meal voucher for concessions or a 47 Brand Salem Red Sox hat ($20 value).

The Ballpark’s Best Flex Plan is $80 and comes with 10 undated ticket vouchers good for Strike Zone, box or general admission seats, a 47 Brand Salem Red Sox hat and one $5 meal voucher.

There are also deals specifically for kids and seniors who plan to attend multiple games.

The Kids Club for children 12 and younger costs $30 and includes 10 undated general admission tickets.

With this package, kids also receive a membership T-shirt, two autograph sessions with Red Sox players, five vouchers for the Kids Zone, a 10 percent discount in the souvenir store, a 10 percent discount on baseball camps, two free tickets to each of the three family nights and a coupon booklet for concession items. Additionally, kids will get a free hotdog, chips and soda on each of the 10 Kids Eat Free Sunday games. The total value of this package is more than $250.

Todd Stephenson, vice president and general manager of the team, pointed out that a family of four can purchase two adult Flex Plans and two Kids Club memberships and attend 10 games throughout the summer for $180, plus enjoy the additional perks listed above.

For seniors, groups & dogs

Adults 55 and older might consider joining the Silver Sluggers club.

For $30 members receive 10 undated box seat tickets, a membership T-shirt, a coupon booklet for concession items, a 10 percent discount in the souvenir store, entry to two Silver Slugger events in the club level, an exclusive meet the team party and a shot to be chosen Silver Slugger of the Game. The Silver Slugger of the Game is selected at random during each Silver Slugger game and wins a prize package. The total value of this package is $180.

Scout troops, youth groups and other clubs should look into special group pricing. Groups of 30 or more people can purchase general admission seats for $5 or box seats for $7. Group tickets must be purchased in advance. Stephenson suggests 10 days in advance for general admission seats or 14 days in advance for box seats.

There’s even a special deal for furry friends.

Dogs are welcome to come and enjoy Bark in the Park during every Sunday home game. Dogs can enter the park for $5 per game, or you can buy a 10-game season pass for $20. Four-legged fans are required to bring proof of vaccination to enter.

Other promotions

Throughout the season there are also tons of promotions for all attendees. All weekend games include poster giveaways for the first 500 fans. May 17-19, the ballpark will be supporting breast cancer research with Pink in the Park. Before these games, 1,000 pink T-shirts will be given away on Friday and 1,000 pink tuxedo T-shirts will be given away on Saturday.

What flavor will you choose? Graphic courtesy of Ben & Jerry’s.

It’s that time of year again — Free Cone Day at Ben & Jerry’s is back!

Stop by the Ben & Jerry’s locations at Valley View or New River Valley Mall tomorrow during regular business hours (9 a.m. to 9 p.m. for Valley View or 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. for NRV) and you can get a free scoop in the flavor of your choice.

My sister and I have made this a little tradition each year. It’s a great way to perk up a weekday, and this warm, spring weather (finally) makes ice cream even better.

What flavor will you choose? It’s a three-way tie between Chunky Monkey, Strawberry Cheesecake and Oatmeal Cookie for me. I’ll have to make a game time decision.
