Salem man uncovers $250K lottery ticket

On November 2, 2007, Salem resident Thomas Broyles bought a Mega Millions lottery ticket from the Stop In Food Store on Roanoke Street in Christiansburg. He didn’t claim it until April 25, five days away from its expiration date.

“It fell behind some papers in the glove compartment,” he told Virginia Lottery officials when he claimed his prize. “ I couldn’t believe it”. The first five numbers matched the winning numbers for that drawing: 1-3-34-49-52. If his ticket had matched the Mega Ball, he’d have split a jackpot estimated at $75 million.

Broyles was one of just eight people nationwide to win the second highest prize in the Mega Millions lottery. He told Virginia lottery officials that he intends to invest his winnings.
