Bright and early this Thursday morning, students involved with FCA, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, clubs around the valley met at First Baptist Church on Third Street in downtown Roanoke for their last meeting of the year. Special guests included Virginia Tech running back Dustin Pickle, his girlfriend, 2007 Miss Virginia Lauren Barnette, and Virginia Tech football chaplain Johnny Shelton. Pickle attended Glenvar High School until his junior year, when he transferred over to Salem High School. He graduated in 2005. Barnette is from Wise and is a student at VT. Pickle and Barnette shared their experiences and challenges with Christianity, encouraging the kids to share their beliefs through example and by word of mouth. Pickle recounted a visit from former Tech players Greg Myers and Nick Sorenson to FCA when he was only in the sixth grade. "I didn't really hear a word they said, it just mattered that they were there," and Pickle said that he enjoyed the opportunity to influence students in the same way. Glenvar High School students put on a skit before the guest speakers, re-enacting the story of the Good Samaritan in a high school setting. "Huddle" leader (teacher sponsor) Rusty Galbreath played the bullied nerd, mostly because SOLs and end-of-year exams has kept FCA students so busy. |
