Photos of antique speedsters rolling out of SalemPosted Jun13, 2008 at 09:31 AM
Approximately 15 Ford Model Ts, As, and Chevrolets are meeting in Roanoke/Salem for the 5th annual Speedster Rally. Organizer Mike Trenor of Salem estimates that nearly 22 vehicles, all of them from the 1910s and 20s, will meet up for rides around Roanoke to nearby locales. One vehicle came from as far away as Washington state! Yesterday (June 12), they drove up to the New River Valley Speedway to race the antique cars on the drag strip, and they'll continue to sightsee through Buchanan and Natural Bridge today. The tour will conclude Saturday in the Catawba Valley and Botetourt area. Top left photo: Mike Trenor stands with Russ Potter (far left) and Potter's two granddaughters, Joselyn Landers in the driver's seat, and her sister Sarah Landers. Joselyn and her grandfather rebuilt her 1926 Model T (with a 1912 carburetor) together when she was 15. She even took her driver's test in a Model T. Potter, "godfather" of the Model T Speedster Club, organized the first rally in Rockville, Indiana. Second photo: Kyle and Mary Harris of Buchanan cruise in Kyle's 1915 Model T. Kyle Harris is the president of the local Model T chapter: "The Cranky-Ts of the Blue Ridge." Check out our photosharing account for more photos of the antique speedsters.
