The Salem Fire & EMS Department responded to a natural gas leak inside of Liberty Medical Supply located at 2157 Apperson Drive this morning at approximately 9:00 a.m. Approximately 400 people were evacuated from the structure while fire crews looked for the source of the leak. Two of the evacuated employees were transported to area hospitals by Salem Fire & EMS ambulances; with non-life threatening symptoms related the leak. The first units arrived within five minutes of receiving the call and found the building being evacuated with a strong smell of natural gas coming from inside the building. Firefighters ensured the building was evacuated, and found the source of the leak to be a damaged gas pipe located on the roof of the building. A representative from Roanoke Gas Company assisted fire crews with shutting the gas off to the building, as well as monitoring conditions around the building. The gas line appeared to be damaged by crews working on the roof earlier in the week. Approximately 20 personnel from the Salem Fire & EMS Department and the Salem Rescue Squad responded to the call. After the building was ventilated utilizing positive pressure ventilation fans, crews monitored the building and deemed the building to be safe. Employees were allowed to return to the building around 12:45 p.m. |
