Photos of bear raiding bird feeder off Wildwood Road

DSC_0094_editedSMALL.jpg

Loyd Tingler sends us some spectacular photos of a bear in his back yard off Wildwood Road.

Loyd tells us: "These pictures were captured at 10:54 pm on June 19, 2008 in Salem off Wildwood Road at I-81 exit 137 -- at bird feeders approximately 15-20 feet from a kitchen window. In the picture showing it on all four feet, the feeder post to its right measures 4 ft. 2 in. from the ground to the bottom of the baffle. We're guessing its height to be about 3 ft. In the pictures on its hind legs, the feeder post measures 6 ft. 7 in. from the ground to the bottom of the baffle. We're guessing its nose to be about 6 ft. 3 in. in the air. Could it possibly weigh between 200 and 300 pounds?"

We've put all six of Loyd's photos into this photo gallery.

Have you seen a bear lately? If so, our data delivery editor, Matt Chittum, wants to know. Not all data is cold, heartless numbers. Some of it's warm and fuzzy, like our map of unusual bear sightings.

And if you have interesting photos from Salem and western Roanoke County, you can share them at news@sosalem.com -- whether they have bears in them or not.
