Roanoke College student earns citizenship, hugs President Bush

Roanoke College junior Vesna Zeljkovic became a U.S. citizen on the 4th of July—and she did it in a big way.

She took the oath of citizenship at the annual Independence Day ceremony at Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson. And there, addressing the honorees, was President Bush, who hugged Zeljkovic after she became a citizen. A photo of that hug ran in The New York Times as well as other major news media.

Zeljkovic, an international relations major, is from Bosnia-Herzegovina and has been in the United States for eight years. Six of her Delta Gamma sorority sisters from Roanoke College accompanied her and her family to the big event on the fourth.

The story is online at www.nytimes.com/2008/07/05/washington/05bush.html?partner=rssnyt&emc=rss.
