Thunderstorm Responses The Salem Fire & EMS Department responded to several fire calls in a short period of time when a severe thunderstorm came through the City this afternoon. The fire department responded to eight calls for assistance during the storm. Two of the calls were for buildings that were struck by lightning. Lightning struck the Sonic Drive-In located at 830 West Main Street and Our Lady of Perpetual Help church building located at 314 Turner Road. Lightning struck a wireless headset control at the Sonic Drive-In causing everyone who was wearing a headset to hear a pop. The strike caused the bottom of one employees shoe to blow out. The employee was standing an estimated five to seven feet away from the box when the strike occurred. She was evaluated by Salem Fire & EMS Department paramedics, but was not transported to a hospital by EMS personnel. At the same time other Salem Fire & EMS Department units responded to a lightning strike at Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Firefighters arrived to find the roof of the church and a cross located near the roof to have suffered damage from the lightning. Further investigation revealed damage to an electrical junction box causing some moderate damage to the exterior of the church. Firefighters investigated both lighting strikes but found the damage to be limited to the area of the strike. The strikes did not cause any fires or extend past the initial strike.
