Cookies complement life lessons at First United Methodist Church

There they were, eating sprinkles, and moulding their cookie dough around more confectionaries. Then the kids found out they had to wait for their treats to bake. That's okay -- they were headed off to storytime in the library of First United Methodist in Salem. The book is entitled "Cookies: Bite Size Lessons" by Amy Krouse Rosenthal.
"We'll make some cookies, read the book, eat the cookies and see if they learn their life lessons," said storytime organizer Trish Givens. And that they did. Words like patience, compassion, cooperate, and respect are big words to kids younger than the second grade, but simple explanations (and picture books!) help.
First United Methodist is on West Main Street in Salem. Other book projects organized by Givens have included ice cream cones resembling snowmen (with "Stranger in the Woods.") While the kids enjoy the treats, "the main thing is they’re being exposed to good books to read at home," she said.
