Salem native Braxton nominated to lead prominent New York churchPosted Aug05, 2008 at 04:18 PMBrad Braxton, formerly of Salem has been nominated to become the new senior minister of the prominent Riverside Church in New York City. Here's a story about his nomination in the New York Times. Braxton, 39, graduated from Salem High School in 1987, won a Jefferson Scholarship to the University of Virginia and went on to become a Rhodes scholar. He most recently has been associate professor of homiletics and New Testament at Vanderbilt Divinity School in Nashville, Tenn. His father was the Rev. James Braxton, a well-known community leader who helped Salem's First Baptist Church grow as he served as its pastor for 33 years. The elder Braxton died in 2004.
