Ultra marathon trail runner visits SalemPosted Aug19, 2008 at 03:00 PM
Michael Wardian visited Salem once again for a race -- this time, it was the Health Focus of Southwest Virginia Salem Distance run on August 9. Wardian won the 50 mile trail run National Championship in Crystal, Washington for the third time in July 2008. He's also on the USA team for the World 100 mile race in Italy this November. Some Salem folks who competed did well, including Sarah Hakkenberg and Lori Callahan, who placed first and third, with time of 22:13 and 22:40, respectively, in the women's 5K. Andy Sayers of Salem placed third in the men's 10K with a time of 35:40. Other first place folks included Dave Baxter of Roanoke in the men's 5K with a time of 16:25, Shauna Mugavero of Blacksburg in the women's 10K with a time of 42:35, and George Probst of Blacksburg with a time of 33:47 in the men's 10K (behind Wardian.)
The annual Salem Distance Run began 33 years ago with Richard Browder, former cross country coach at Roanoke College. Since then, the annual event has been sponsored by the city of Salem. The 5K and 10K runs plus the 3 mile poker walk in Salem residential areas drew 272 participants with the youngest at 6-years-old and the oldest at 75, according to Judy Hagadorn of Health Focus of SW VA.
