Art in the Alley is Sept. 28

When Harriet Stokes, Peyton Kline, Kate Woods, and Dr. Harry Menarik started “Art in the Alley” behind the Glen Mary Apartments (what is now Langhorne Place) in 1970, they only intended for it to be a local art show. They hung their artwork on garage doors and had a few guests.

This year, Stokes has invited 14 local artists from around Salem, Roanoke, and Lynchburg. A recent graduate of Hollins University, an “emerging artist,” Mandy Atkinson, is invited this year. While Kline, Woods, and Menarik have since passed on, other area artists who continue the tradition are Vera Dickinson, Eric Fitzpatrick, Peter Wreden, and Tim Kelly still shows his late wife, Emily’s works—and the crowd has grown considerably.

So, on Sunday, September 28, park on Lewis Avenue and walk on over to “Art in the Alley.” The works will be displayed from 1 to 5 p.m., and the rain location is the parish hall of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
