The Salem Fire & EMS Department responded to an apartment fire at the Salem Ridge Apartments, (1609 Lancing Drive) this afternoon at approximately 12:40p.m.
One person was in the apartment at the time of the fire and escaped without injury. The first units arrived within five minutes and found heavy smoke coming from the third floor and roof of the apartment building.
The building was evacuated and the fire was contained within ten minutes of the arrival of the first unit. The fire was contained to the kitchen by first-in fire crews. Approximately 22 personnel from the Salem Fire & EMS Department and the Salem Rescue Squad responded to the call.
The fire was determined to be accidental, caused by unattended cooking on a stove. Maintenance crews were evaluating the damage to the apartment and the surrounding apartments, and did not have a damage estimate.
The kitchen of the apartment was heavily damaged by the fire, and the rest of the apartment suffered heavy smoke damage. There was some light smoke damage to other apartments on the third floor, but all residents of the building were allowed to return to their apartments with the exception of the resident of the unit in which the fire occurred. The residents will be assisted by the American Red Cross until the apartment can be repaired.
