Jorden Herald, who attended Glenvar (VA) High School, joined the Lady Rams softball team at a signing ceremony on campus Monday afternoon.

Herald is ready to take on the next challenge that lies ahead and felt that Bluefield College was the appropriate place to continue her career as a student-athlete.

"I actually heard about Bluefield on the spirit FM radio station and they [BC] became instantly appealing because it's a Christian school," Herald said.

"Lauren is a great coach and I'm excited about this opportunity and think it will be a great experience," Herald said.

Herald -- who also fielded offers from Catawba (NC) College, Ferrum (VA) College, Emory & Henry (VA) College, and Virginia Intermont College -- was a First Team All-District performer as a junior and senior at Glenvar. She also was honorable mention All-Region her senior season and earned offensive Player of the Year honors as a junior.

Lady Rams head coach Lauren Shepard is enthusiastic about adding Herald to the team.

"Jorden looks like a really strong leader on the field and other girls will see her as a good example with her hard work ethic," Shepard said. "She should provide good, healthy competition in practice so hopefully she'll push everybody to do their best and work harder."

Herald spent most of her first two years of high school in the outfield, but in the opening weeks of her junior season, she was moved to third base in the middle of a game and she hasn't looked back since.

"Playing the hot corner (3B) means I see more action with the speed of the game and that will only increase now that I'm in college," Herald stated. "I'm sure entering college will have its challenges, but I feel I'll do just fine. I've always been pretty good at transitions."

Shepard recognizes Herald's strengths and feels she will contribute in many different areas.

"She has a really good bat, has shown some power, and has the ability to put the ball in play," Shepard said. "Defensively, she has very good range of motion and will be able to help at third or first [base]."

Herald, who plans to major in history, is confident that she can make an immediate impact on the softball diamond.

"I feel that I'm a strong hitter and can read a bunt very well when playing third base," Herald said.

Herald started playing recreation league softball at the age of ten and claims she "just picked it up" due to the fact that she focused more on cheerleading the early part of her teenage years.

She was a very quick study and turned out to be a natural.
