"Party for a Purpose" brought local greenies and students to Olin GalleryPosted Sep09, 2008 at 04:14 PM
Green Team Entertainment put on its second “Party for a Purpose” at Roanoke College on Monday, Sept. 8, handing out free CFL lightbulbs, collecting plastic grocery bags, providing exhibits from local “green” groups, and there was even some free organic food and beverage from Happy Belli Deli and Star City Coffee. Kelly Ogilvie was there, promoting events such as Virginia Power Shift — a statewide gathering at Virginia Tech that will educate college students on how environmental issues work within the government and with policy making. The intent, she said, is not to threaten policymakers, but “to get somebody to take it seriously... to understand the issues, and the science behind this.” The Roanoke College student and Salem grad represented Earthbound, an RC group that helps keep other students environmentally aware. Presentations from Roanoke Valley Cool Cities and music from Foster Burton kept the event both relaxed and aimed at helping folks reduce their carbon footprint. The first “Party for a Purpose” was held this spring at Roanoke College. The school recently established a Green Advisory Committee to collaborate and strengthen initiatives to help the environment.
