Salem City Summer School ReportPosted Sep12, 2008 at 03:06 PMAt the Sept. 9 school board meeting, the numbers of students in the city’s various summer school programs were announced. * High school credit-bearing courses had 169 students enrolled, including 57 for driver’s education classes. Fourteen students met graduation requirements as a result of summer school. *Forty-two students took high school remediation courses because they failed the end-of-course SOL test but passed the class in that subject area. The 25-hour-courses took place over one week periods, and produced a 55% summer school pass rate for non-writing SOLs, and a 75% pass rate for the English Writing SOL. *Fifty-seven students took middle school remediation classes because they demonstrated a need based on their SOL tests. They also took one-week courses, and those participating in the World Geography remedial program had the chance to retake the test. Five out of 14 passed the test on their second try. *Thirty-seven middle school students went to summer school through two- and three- week sessions for students at risk of poor academic performance. The program focused mainly on math and English. *Elementary summer school enrolled 207 students in grades kindergarten through fifth, for 3 ¼ hours, for 14 days. The program emphasizes reading, writing, and math skills, but also covers social studies, science, and language arts. The report also states that “Online SOL testing provided quicker results than ever before, allowing sufficient time for Salem to enroll students who did not pass an SOL test in grades 3, 4, and 5 if the student was not already on the summer school roster.” For more information on what happened at the last school board meeting, visit the school board’s online public database.
