Roanoke County sets aggressive emissions reduction target, recognizes work of Cool Cities Coalition

This release was submitted by Mark McClain with Roanoke Valley Cool Cities. Check out their comments below about the Roanoke County Board’s move to reduce emissions by 3% in a year.

“Culminating nearly two years of planning and analysis, the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors approved three resolutions yesterday, paving the way for a multi-year campaign to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. These emissions are widely acknowledged to be a principal cause of global climate change. Prior to introducing the resolutions, Cave Spring District Supervisor Charlotte Moore acknowledged the work of county staff, local scientists who provided technical expertise, Roanoke Valley Cool Cities Coalition and several of its affiliates, and Roanoke Cement, a Titan America Company that provided funding for expert assistance to the County in this project. All three resolutions passed by unanimous vote of the five members of the Board of Supervisors.

Following the Board action, Roanoke Valley Cool Cities Coalition’s Diana Christopulos commented, “We’re so grateful to Charlotte Moore, without whose efforts this great achievement might not have been possible. We are very excited to be a part of this landmark decision, and we look forward to working with the new citizens’ committee, the Board of Supervisors, and county staff, as they sustain their quest to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and strive toward a smart, clean energy future for our community.”

Students at Wesleyan Preschool became blackbelts for a day

Check out these photos from John Bryant with Superkicks Karate:

The students from Wesleyan Preschool became black belts for a day. My name is John Bryant and I teach at Super Kicks Karate in Salem. On February 18th I was invited to teach a life skills class to the children and I was very impressed by their attentiveness and great enthusiasm.

In our class we discussed the importance of setting and achieving your goals, developing and showing your confidence, and of course having a “black belt attitude” which means never giving up and always doing your best.

Each of the students did an incredible job and the excitement ran high as we practiced getting away from strangers and our front kicks. Thank you Wesleyan Preschool for having me by, I enjoyed the opportunity to share the martial arts with your incredible students!

John also sent photos from GW Carver’s Get Fit health fair. Click here to see the rest of them! For more about the health fair, visit our blog entry from Feb. 20.

You can send your news tips, photos, and story ideas to news@sosalem.com just like John did, and we’ll post ’em up here on the Notebook!
