Truck crash lowered turnout for American Legion’s September 11 event
The American Legion hosted a family concert on September 11 from 6 to 8 p.m. at their Hall on Apperson Drive to benefit Military Families Support Centers. There were hot dogs, the Salem Ice Cream Parlor truck was there. There was even free facepainting, and a few dignitaries and politicians who spoke on military values, but there was a low turnout. An organizer, Fred Eichelman, said it was due to the tractor trailer accident on Interstate 81 from earlier that afternoon.
Singer and movie star Rebecca Holden “did give you a full concert and audience size does not keep her from giving 100%. She thoroughly enjoyed the event and meeting everyone,” Eichelman said. She also sang at the Salem Republican Breakfast and at Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church in Vinton later that weekend, September 12 and 13.
