“Johnny Reb” statue turns 100, ceremony held 2 p.m. June 5

For 100 years, the “Johnny Reb” statue has stood in front of the old Salem courthouse (now Roanoke College’s West Hall), honoring the Roanoke County men who fought in the Civil War. The Southern Cross Chapter 746 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy will host a parade and a program at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 5. The parade begins at the Oakey’s parking lot on College Avenue to where the statue stands at the corner of Main Street.

Speakers include Roanoke College history professor Mark Miller, RC history professor and Salem Museum curator John Long, and UDC presiding officer Dolores Smith. They will discuss the monument’s history and speak briefly on the history of the Confederate units from Roanoke County.
