Salem High joins Facebook and Twitter to update parents
Salem High School stepped into the digital age of social networking to keep parents, students, and the community up to date earlier this summer by creating a Facebook and a Twitter account.
Parents and students can still access the standard list of announcements through the “Parent Portal Bulletin” on the Salem High website, but Facebook and Twitter users who subscribe to the Salem High School social networking set-ups can get updated when they log into the social networking sites. If they select the option to be updated via SMS, text messages will be sent to their phones every time an update is made.
“When we work on a comprehensive plan as a school system, we survey parents,” said Scott Habeeb, assistant principal at SHS. “And one of the things that was fairly consistent or a common statement is that parents want the school to do a better job communicating […] The statistics said good job, but the comments said that we could do better.”
“Ideally we’d have very single parent who’s on Facebook as a fan,” he said. So far, games, construction updates, schedule reminders, and faculty and student accolades have been posted.
