Holiday lights: Penguins on Antrim Street

Once again, we’re assembling an online map of the biggest and brightest displays of Christmas lights around Salem — and the rest of Western Virginia.

On the list this year: Jimmy Holt of 1438 Antrim Street.

Among the features there: Penguins! Well, not real ones, of course.

Display times: 5:30 pm til 9:30 pm

You can see all the submissions so far on our online map.

Want to add yours? We have the submission form on the Datasphere, our site for searchable data.

We also have tips for taking great photos of Christmas lights from photographer Eric Brady of The Roanoke Times.

There’s more vendors at Ye Olde Salem Christmas than in years past

Laura Reilly, Salem’s Farmers Market Manager, shares this update on this Saturday’s Ye Olde Salem Christmas:

“At the Farmers Market we will have over 40 vendors with holiday greenery, winter vegetables, delicious baked goods, savory treats, pet treats, salsa, as well as hot donuts, cheese and eggs, and of course honey!  The crafters will include beautiful scarves, blankets, jewelry, hair accessories, wooden crafts, photography, and so much more.  It really is going to be  great day, and I am excited that the weather is going to cooperate.”

The lighting of the Salem Christmas Tree and parade are this Friday, Dec. 2.

Breakfast with Santa, The Gingerbread Festival, and Ye Olde Salem Christmas are this Saturday, Dec. 3.

Over 50 Senior Christmas Gifts Collected at Green Ridge

This is the final week of the “Santa to a Senior” gift program for seniors in need, sponsored by Home Instead Senior Care. Green Ridge Recreation Center is celebrating its first year of program participation and has already received over 50 gifts.

Program director and Home Instead Senior Care franchise owner Betsy Head is exited by the overwhelming response from gift donors. “We appreciate the generosity of the folks of the Roanoke Valley and the participants at Green Ridge, especially in their first year! The program touches the lives of thousands of seniors across the Valley. These are the basic necessities of life, but the human touch is really what brings the joy and makes a difference in people’s lives.” Betsy estimates that over 4,000 packages will be collected this week to go to seniors in need.

Photos: Annie and Jerry celebrate Halloween

Happy Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. I decorated inside and outside of my house. I have mums, pumpkins, black cat toys, talking witch, talking monster man, and scooby doo. On my uniform I had crafts made by Ms. Parks, who is one of my residents, she made a ghost, a black cat, a pumpkin, a witch, and a VT turkey craft for me. also I had a giant inflation of a black-widow spider lying in my yard. My son, Jerry Wu and I wore our AVATAR costumes. Of course, my beautiful garden with all different flowers blooming as celosia cristata(雞冠花), tropicana black, roses, hibiscus, mums with colorful fall leaves. I just like them.
Hally Halloween to everyone!
