Tabernacle Baptist youth hosting spaghetti luncheon Feb. 19

The Youth at Tabernacle Baptist Church will be having Spaghetti Luncheon Sunday, February 19, around noon, after the church service.

The menu: Homemade spaghetti, salad, garlic bread, and dessert.

Adults $6 & Children $3*. ALL FUNDS WILL GO TOWARDS CENTRIFUGE CAMP DEPOSIT.

She’s International is collecting used ladies’ suits for “Suits for Success”

She’s International at 112 East Main St. is hosting a “Suits for Success” drive Thursday through Saturday February 23, 24, and 25 to benefit women at The Turning Point, the Rescue Mission, GiGi’s Closet, TAP Women’s Rescue Center and other women-oriented-missions.

“We’re looking for anything that a woman can get to help her return to work successfully,” said owner Diane Speaks. Suits and other business attire (from business-dressy to business-casual) and accessories, preferably dry-cleaned before drop-off, will go directly to the shelters and missions.

Three students from Salem High’s DECA club place in District Leadership Conference, advance to state

On January 6, 18 students from Salem High School’s Distributive Education Clubs of America competed at the District Leadership Conference held at New River Community College.

Three students placed and advanced to the State Leadership Conference, which will be held in Norfolk, VA, March 9-11:

1st place overall in Retail Merchandising Services – Kendrick Hochstetler, Kendrick is also our DECA President this year.
1st place overall in Sports and Entertainment Marketing – Michael Hager, Michael is our Vice President.
2nd place overall in Communications – Jonathan Cribb.  Jonathan is a first year marketing student and this is a great accomplishment for him.

Along with these three gentleman, we will have several other student attend the State Leadership Conference as team members and one might even attend the leadership seminar to learn more about DECA in preparing to be an officer next year.

Salem High grad named interim head coach of College of Charleston men’s basketball

Reader Gene Bourne sends us this news tip:

CHARLESTON, S.C. - College of Charleston men’s basketball head coach Bobby Cremins has decided to take a medical leave of absence effective immediately. Associate Head Coach Mark Byington has been appointed as interim head coach.

Byington has been Cremins’ top assistant for the last six years and has coached nine years overall at CofC as a member of former head coach Tom Herrion’s coaching staff from 2002-04 and 2005-06.

Salem Public Library winter and spring story times for January – May 2012

Toddler program: Ages 18 mos. to 3 years old. The Toddler program is an early literacy based program using rhymes, songs, finger plays, puppets, and books to stimulate young children. It is designed for the parent of caregiver to sit and interact with their child. Time: 25-30 minutes

Pre-school program: Ages 3-5 years old. This is a theme-based program with a focus on developing a love of books and library time. It is a time for the child to develop independence and therefore the parent does not stay with the child. Children and parents form friendships here at the library that can last a lifetime. The last 15 minutes is a craft/art time.

Jan. 31-Feb. 1: Elephant Time
Feb. 7-8: Swing with the Monkeys
Feb. 14-15: Valentine + party (sign up for snacks one week prior to party)
*No story time for Feb. 21-22
Feb. 28-29: Pets are Nice

Woman sues Salem Fair operator over roller coaster wreck

A woman who said she was injured in a roller coaster wreck at the Salem Fair last summer has filed a $1 million lawsuit against the ride’s operator.

Michele Carder, executive chef at Salem Terrace at Harrogate, a fairly new assisted living facility in Salem, made the soup that was voted the best at Sunday’s [Jan. 22] third annual Souper Bowl charity fundraiser. The event raised some $20,000 for the Roanoke Rescue Mission and Roanoke Area Ministries.

Ardell Stone School of Dancing wins regional awards

Congratulations to the Ardell Stone School of Dancing Performing Company!  The Ardell Stone dancers competed in Tremaine’s Regional Dance Competition in Washington, DC.  The girls competed against dancers from New Jersey, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland.  They were judged on technique, showmanship, choreography and costumes.

The Junior Company won 2nd place Lyrical and 3rd place Jazz!  This was their first competition!

The Senior Company won 1st place Lyrical and 2nd Place Jazz!

The Ardell Stone dancers also took classes in jazz, ballet, contemporary, street, tap and hip hop dance from some of the leading dance professionals in the country.

In addition, the dancers auditioned for dance scholarships to attend future Tremaine Dance Conventions.  Congratulations to Sidney Green for being selected for a Teen Convention Scholarship!
