Notice the traffic cameras on Main Street and 4th Street last week (April 23-27)? They’re out on Route 419 this week (April 30-May 4) says A.K. Briele with the city of Salem Electric Department.
The cameras are counting traffic for the city to reconfigure the traffic light coordination for those streets, and the city does this every several years, he said.
“The idea is to minimize the total amount of time people are stopped at the light. It’s a program that runs through to give us the maximum efficiency on that,” Briele said.
Mattern & Craig is the company who is doing the consulting work with the traffic cameras. Briele says that the changes in traffic light timing from the study should happen in the next one to two months.
