Buzz mounts around potential closure of Fort Lewis Elementary School; no decision has been made
Buzz has been mounting recently about the possible closure of Fort Lewis Elementary School after the end of this school year.
According to Chuck Lionberger, spokesperson for Roanoke County Public Schools, closing Fort Lewis Elementary School is just one of many options on the table at this point.
“No decision has been made,” Lionberger stresses, and “by no means is the ‘will’ there at all,” he says of rumors that the school will close after this year.
Dr. Lorraine Lange and Penny Hodge presented several options at the Roanoke County School Board work session on Saturday, Aug. 18, for reducing the schools budget next year. View the meeting agenda here for a list of many possible solutions along with this report on the meeting from Courtney Cutright of The Roanoke Times.
Roanoke County Public Schools opened for the 2012-2013 school year on Tuesday, Aug. 21.

Unfortunately, Chuck is toeing the party line for the school board and the county by saying that no decision has been made. School staff was told Monday to prepare for the worst by county school officials. Look, my kid goes to school there. I’m not just blowing smoke to gather fire. I don’t want to have to send my child to another school. Fort Lewis has been brought up for closure every year for the past several years as one of the cost cutting options and this time our luck has run out.
