Tuesday marks start of another school year in Salem

Tuesday marks the first day of school for the City of Salem, and we have photos from Tuesday morning at West Salem Elementary School.

“My favorite part is the excitement,” said principal Trula Byington of the first day of school. “One year, a student came up to me–he was wearing all new clothes–and he said, ‘Are you wearing new clothes?’ ” She wasn’t, she said, but she thanked him for the reminder.

As the students exited the buses, all of their new clothes and shoes and backpacks were on display. While a few showed signs of trepidation, most students (and teachers) seemed excited.

“I never sleep the night before the first day,” Byington said.

Of course, the first day of school means that buses are back on the roads again in Salem, and Salem police will have “additional radar patrols in all school zones,” according to an Instant Info release from the City of Salem.
