Kitchen fire damages Salem apartment

The Salem Fire & EMS Department responded to a structure fire at the Salem Wood Apartment Complex (Apartment H-92) this morning at approximately 9:36 a.m. Three occupants were inside the apartment at the time of the fire, but all were able to escape without injury.
The first units arrived within seven minutes of receiving the call and found smoke coming from the second floor of the building. Crews found a fire in the kitchen and were able to contain the fire to that room. The apartment did sustain moderate smoke damage.
Approximately 15 personnel from the Salem Fire & EMS Department (Engine 1, Engine 2, Engine 3 & Medic 803) and the Salem Rescue Squad (Squad 1) responded to the call.
The fire began when residents were cooking on the stove and it has been ruled accidental by the Salem Fire Marshal’s Office. Damage from the fire is estimated to be $15,000.

The Salem Firecrackers ended a season with a win to become the U12 champions in Salem on Thursday, October 25. Having been in last place at one point during the regular season, the Firecrackers rallied back to be the number three seed during the playoffs. Fire Safety Truck visits Fort Lewis Elementary

Fort Lewis Elementary principal Cindy Klimaitis shares these photos from Fire Prevention Week, which was Monday, Oct. 8 through Friday, Oct. 12, and says:

The Fort Lewis Fire Department came and all students got to go through the Fire Safety Truck. The truck simulates “smoke” and students got to practice climbing out a window. Students were given fire hats, pencils and fire station erasers. Students learned about stop, drop and how to roll out of bed if they see or smell smoke.  The Fire Safety Truck has bedroom and a kitchen.  The kids had a great time and it was a realistic way to experience what to do in a real home fire.
