Fort Lewis Elementary holds 8th annual Colonial Day
Fort Lewis Elementary teacher Sherry Meredith has been heading up Colonial Day at FLES for eight years now.
“We’ve worked out the kinks,” she said of the undertaking. Each year, the fourth-graders dress in Colonial attire, play Colonial-inspired games, cook Colonial food, make Colonial crafts and dance the Virginia Reel (that’s what’s going on in these photos).
Music teacher Ms. Saunders started teaching her students the Virginia Reel about a week ago, according to Meredith. The students must be quick learners, because everyone seemed to know all the moves, as they promenaded around the gym Tuesday.
Their talents weren’t contained to the dance floor, either. Cornbread, gingerbread, cooked apples, green beans and more lined a table in the school’s entrance hall. The fourth-graders made the food themselves, and enjoyed it during their Colonial Lunch.
Parent volunteers helped Meredith and Saunders pull off the historic day, one that the students really seem to love.
At the end of the year, “some students say Colonial Day is their favorite day” of the year, Meredith said.
