Here are two musical shows of note for crowbarring into your Christmas calendar:

* A praise band will reprise its praise-worthy Christmas musical on Dec. 16.

“Faith” premiered at First United Methodist Church last year — and hark, it earned its heralded buzz. Written by band-member Allan Davidson, it shows a struggling, modern couple needing the old-time faith of Mary and Joseph.

It also covers a wide range of music. More songs and performers have been added, wrote Allan via email. This year’s cast (all from Salem): Allan and Angie Davidson, Ashley Montgomery, Meg Crew, Emily Mook, Payton Johnson, Bill Hill, Blaine Elliott, Brad Bradley, Dwayne Williams, Joey Poarch, Bobby Pickle, Chris Russ, Archie Thomasson and Randy Burton. Frank and Pam DiRamio are helping to coordinate the production.

And thanks to much time in the recording studio this summer, the band just released its first full-length CD, “A Servant’s Eyes.” Copies are being given to folks attending FUMC’s “Genesis” (early) service, where the praise band plays, and to those attending the musical.

Although “you can make a love offering to the church if so inclined,” Allan stressed that the CD is a gift. You can also hear the band’s original music at www.genesispraise.com. The group is working on individual downloads via iTunes, etc.

“Faith,” Sunday, Dec. 16, 8:45 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. FUMC fellowship hall, 125 W. Main St. (540) 389-5459.

* Another Christmas concert had its genesis from an unlikely source: a yard sale.

Dorothy O’Dell said that she and Andrew Lewis / Salem High School teaching colleague Jane Painter chatted with a lady at a summer yard-sale.

Conversation flowed along these lines, said Dorothy (my aging Wolverine mind still says “Ms. O’Dell”): 1. Hey-my-name-is-also-Jane. 2.Yes-I’m-Jane-Powell-the-singer. 3. How-about-singing-at-my-church?

So a commitment from the renowned soulful singer was secured: This Tuesday, Dec. 11, Salem Church of Christ. Valerie Williams in the church office said food and fellowship will follow the event, coordinated by Linda Dimengo.

Dorothy said they feel fortunate to have landed the stellar performer: “She’ll be on the road after the first of the year.” (Or on the water: Jane Powell’s many gigs include singing on cruise ships.)

Tuesday, Dec. 11, 11:30 a.m., Salem Church of Christ, main auditorium. 401 W. Main St. (near the post office). (540) 389-2400.
