UPDATED Jan. 24 at 11:14 a.m.: Salem High School has announced on their Facebook page that they’ll be selling t-shirts there as well. Here’s the post: Fight Like a Highlander! The Spartans are joining forces with the Highlanders to support Michael Sandridge! Michael is a sophomore at Glenvar High School who was diagnosed with cancer this past summer. In support of him, if you would like to purchase a “MichaelStrong – Fight like a Highlander” t-shirt for $10 (cash only please), please see Mrs. O’Dell in Room 112. They will be sold from Friday, January 25th through Tuesday, January 29th. END UPDATE.

Glenvar High School sophomores Andrew McClung and Drew Norris–classmates and friends of Michael Sandridge, a fellow sophomore who is battling what is believed to be terminal testicular cancer–are selling $10 “Find Your Strong” t-shirts. Fifty five percent of the proceeds from each shirt sold will go back to help Michael and his family with their medical bills.

Norris and McClung began selling the t-shirts on Wednesday, Jan. 23, and by Thursday, Jan. 24 at noon, McClung estimates they’ve sold almost 100 shirts.

“They [Michael's family] were really excited,” when Norris and McClung told them what they were doing, Norris said. “He’s a great kid, he really is,” Norris said of Sandridge. “Everybody likes Michael. I can’t think of a single person who doesn’t.”

Last Friday, the students, faculty and staff at Glenvar High School all wore purple in support of Sandridge. (Annie McCallum of The Roanoke Times has more on that story here.)

“It was crazy,” Norris said of everyone showing their support, “but it makes sense, because everyone at Glenvar loves Michael. At one point, everyone was standing in the lobby singing ‘Amazing Grace.’ ”

“We didn’t think we’d get so much local support,” McClung said.

Norris said he and McClung want to sell the t-shirts for as long as they can.

“We want to make sure everyone who wants a shirt can get one,” he said.

Right now, the shirts are available only at Glenvar High School, but McClung said he and Norris are going to start selling them at all the county schools. Anyone interested in purchasing a shirt who cannot buy one at GHS can contact McClung and Norris through the ‘Fight Michael Fight’ Facebook page.
