Roanoke County approves Moped Helmet Law

The Roanoke County Board of Supervisors recently approved a new law requiring a helmet and other safety equipment for moped users. The new law, which was approved in December, requires that every person operating a moped on a public street or highway in Roanoke County wear a face shield, safety glasses, or goggles or have the moped equipped with safety glass or a windshield. The new law also requires that every person driving a moped, as well as passengers, wear a protective helmet.

Roanoke County police have seen an increase in the number of persons operating mopeds possibly due to the increased cost of fuel and operating costs associated with larger vehicles. Members of the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors want to reduce the risk of serious head injury in the event of a moped accident.

Roanoke County Police are currently working to educate the public on the new ordinance via the County’s website and social media channels. They are also taking time to educate violators about the new law before beginning enforcement later this month. Once enforcement begins, any person violating the ordinance shall be guilty of a traffic infraction and be subject to a fine of not more than $50.
