Salem Museum adds Walter Biggs painting to collection

The Salem Museum shared some exciting news on their Facebook page Monday:

A new acquisition at the Salem Museum! This painting by renowned Salem artist Walter Biggs was donated by a supporter this week. It’s one of Bigg’s black and white illustrations. The donor believed it to be a work from the 1960s, but Biggs also did this type of illustration in his early career, often to illustrate fictional stories in Harper’s Magazine. The subject matter appears to be an African American nurse scolding a child in a library. What a significant addition to our collection– come see it in person!

Whatever the backstory, it’s a significant addition to our collection!

Contact John Long at the Salem Museum for more information by calling 540-389-6760. The Salem Museum is located at 801 E. Main St. in Salem.
