Salem Fitness to close its doors Thursday, Feb. 28
Salem Fitness will close its doors on Thursday, Feb. 28. The fitness center is located at 39 Spartan Drive, in the Spartan Square shopping center in Salem.
Quite simply, “they ran out of money,” said Luke Waldrop, owner of Spartan Square. Waldrop and his staff will be “making adjustments here to put in a new tenant as quickly as possible,” he said.
Owners Ronny Angel and Gene Nervo are not commenting on the closure at this time, according to an employee.
“We wish them [Angel and Nervo] the best of luck,” Waldrop said.
Currently, Salem Fitness is a site for the Silver Sneakers program. When the gym closes, Silver Sneakers program members “have the option of using any other Silver Sneakers in the area,” according to local Silver Sneakers program representative Meaghan Wagner.
Some local participating sites include the Curves in Spartan Square (1457 W. Main Street, Suite M) and Aquatic Adventures in Oak Grove Plaza, located at 2007 Electric Road in Southwest Roanoke County. A list of nearby participating locations can be found on the Silver Sneakers website.
Angel and Nervo assumed ownership of Salem Fitness in August 2012.

It’s a shame that Salem Fitness is closing. It has been a great place to workout. You do not feel cramped and there is always smiling faces to greet you. From the great people that open the doors, (Punch!) to those that clean the showers before locking up at night, you could not find a better bunch of people. It’s sad that the people of Salem do not have another option beside the Y.
For the past 3 years, it has been home away from home. Thanks for the memories!
I would like to echo Lisa’s sentiments. I’ve been a member at Salem Fitness, in one place or the other, for over 20 years. I have friends that I know simply because we gathered at the Fitness Center. I will miss the place a great deal. It’s always been a great “Salem alternative” for me. The Y has never suited me, for various reasons.
