On Saturday, Feb. 2, Salem High School hosted a Prom dress consignment sale, with the goal of having proceeds benefit SHS’s After Prom. The varsity girls basketball team helped to raise awareness of the event by dressing in Prom dresses and shooting a few hoops. (See photos here.)
Coordinator and PTSA President Laura Hart shares that the sale started with a total of 130 dresses.
“Overall, we think it was a success,” Hart said via email on Monday. “Fourteen girls got great dresses Saturday, and lots of people cleaned out their closets. The PTSA had a great time working on the event.”
About 20 of the remaining Prom dresses were returned to their owners, Hart said, but the rest were taken to the newfangled bride, 107 W. Main St. in Salem.
“People looking for affordable formal wear can continue to shop for them there,” Hart continued in her email. “In addition to her [owner Alyce Haynes'] stock of consignment formal wear, she has agreed to carry them [the remaining dresses] for the SHS After Prom committee, and will give the profits from the donated dresses back to Salem High School.”
For more information, call the newfangled bride at 540-389-1010.
“Hopefully we can do this yearly,” Hart said. Most of the shoppers were from schools other than Salem High School, according to Hart.
There will be a similar Prom dress sale, Cinderella’s Closet, on Saturday, Feb. 16, at Proms, Pageants, & Pretty Things at The Brides House, 5325 Peters Creek Road in Roanoke. The event is sponsored by the Glenvar High School PTA and the Northside High School PTSA.
