Basketball update: Salem girls win semi-final, advance to title game
The Salem girls basketball team tips off this morning in the state semi-finals in Richmond against Loudoun County. Sportswriter Robert Anderson of The Roanoke Times is on site and will be tweeting at twitter.com/timesland.

10:59 a.m.:Heavy snow in Richmond can’t stop VHSL games. Salem girls ready to tip off against Loudoun County.
11:04 a.m.: We’re underway – Salem Spartans with an early 2-0 lead. (From VHSL athletics)
11:07 a.m.: Salem zone has held Loudoun County scoreless for 3 minutes Spartans lead 4-0.
11:09 a.m.: 6-2 Spartans 4:05 (From VHSL athletics.)
11:10 a.m.: Salem leads 8-3, but Spartans already have five team fouls with 3:23 left in 1st quarter.
11:14 a.m.: Salem ups lead to 11-3 with strong play from some reserves. Timeout Salem, 2:30 left 1st quarter.
11:17 a.m.: Salem girls have showed up intending to win today. Pep band is getting it done too.
11:19 a.m.: Loudoun County closes 1st quarter with 4-0 run. Salem 13, LC 10 end 1st.
11:26 a.m.: Tay Taylor off to fast start for Salem, but she just picked up foul No. 2. Taylor already has 10 points.
11:27 a.m.: Got to give a shout-out to Jonathan Milberger on the sax for Salem pep band.
11:29 a.m.: Salem 17, Loudoun County 14, midway through 2nd quarter.
11:30 a.m.: Salem has a lot of “assistant coaches” in the stands. Guess what guys. You’re not helping.
11:34 a.m.: Tay Taylor has picked up her 3rd foul. She’ll probably take a seat for the half with 3:12 left. Salem leads 19-15.
11:35 a.m.: DeWayne Harrell is a gambler. Tay Taylor is back in the game and she just hit a shot and is at the line for an and-one.
11:37 a.m.: Halftime: Salem 23, Loudoun County 19
11:48 a.m.: Halftime stats: Salem 34.6 percent. LC 34.8 percent. LC 22-19 rebounding edge. Salem just 5 turnovers. LC just 3 for 11 FTs.
11:57 a.m.: Taylor elevating her game. Spartans also getting good play from Beth Plympton. Salem leads 35-22.
12:03 p.m.: Eight minuts to go! Salem leads 37-26 over Loudoun County. Tay Taylor 20 points. Spartans bench has chipped in 12.
12:07 p.m.: Salem now up 42-26 after three-point play by Tessa Foley on assist by Maddie Price.
12:08 p.m.: Salem’s previous two semifinals were bad experiences, but they were experience nonetheless. It’s showing today.
12:12 p.m.: Loudoun County looks like a beaten team. Salem 43, LC 27, 5:03 to play. Margin could be worse but Salem is missing easy layups.
12:13 p.m.: Tessa Foley starting to dominate backboards as Loudoun County is tiring. Salem 46-27 with 4:55 left.
12:22 p.m.: Salem leads 48-29 with 2:37 left. Tessa Foley has just fouled out with double-figure rebounds.
12:24 p.m. Salem clears its bench.
12:28 p.m.: Final: Salem 51, Loudoun County 38. Tay Taylor 24 points.
Note: The championship games are Saturday. The girls play Courtland at 7 p.m., the boys play the winner of today’s E.C. Glass-Grafton game at 9 p.m.
