Sherwood Memorial Park to add veterans garden, administrative buildings

0725%20Salem%20Sherwood111.jpg

With over 7,000 veterans buried within its gates, Sherwood Memorial Park is working on a way to help memorialize its deceased members of the military. The park is also building new offices for the administrative staff along East Main Street.

Plans for the veterans garden have not been finalized, as the park is looking for a way to offer inexpensive memorial plaques while keeping the main feature and garden as elegant and beautiful as possible. Tentative plans include a pentagon-shaped fountain, with each side representing one of the armed forces. Currently, the park hopes to finish the project by the end of the year.

Employees are slated to move into the new building next week. The new space will free up areas in the mausoleum and other buildings around the park for patrons, as well as leaving them free to remove their cramped offices (a small building and a mobile home) on the Lynchburg Turnpike.

"It will just be nice to have space to receive families," said Susan Mini, family service office manager, of the new building. Sherwood Memorial Park also has plans to begin hosting family, grief, and social programs at the park. Mini hopes that they can offer families and individuals a way to comfortably discuss end-of-life planning and, most importantly, grief.

The doggie daycare bus is coming soon

0627%20Salem%20SixWags111.jpg

July 1 will mark the one-year-anniversary of the Six Wags Dog Park, and its owners, including Katie Halstead, are cooking up a shuttle system scheme to make its Doggy Daycare more convenient to working parents of pooches.

Plans for the final look of the van include a nose and ears (akin to but classier than the van in Dumb and Dumber.)

Pickup is slated to begin Monday, June 23 and will feature a once-a-week pickup to different locations in the Roanoke Valley. Salem will have a Friday pickup opportunity at the Kroger in Spartan Square between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. Dogs will be crated and transported, and payment is expected to be rendered at pickup or prepaid.

Interested owners should contact Six Wags Dog Park before bringing Fido to the scheduled pickup--proof of vaccinations and other simple prerequisites are required for the safety of every attendee of the doggie daycare.

Our last post about the Six Wags Dog Park was here. For more pictures of last Wednesday's Yappy Hour, click here.

Salem gets a new bed-and-breakfast

BrughsInnPhyllisBrugh1.jpg

There's a new inn in town -- Bob and Phyllis Brugh have turned what was a college rental into a refreshing and comfortable bed and breakfast style inn.

Their guests have ranged from a long-staying gentleman who used the inn as a home base while taking care of his father at Lewis Gale, to bed-and-breakfast aficionados, to Salem residents' guests who wanted to visit longer without imposing. The Brughs also offer up their roomy downstairs, patio, and outside area for memorial services, meetings, and catered dinners.

The Brughs, both realtors, had the house on the market when a potential buyer came to look at the home as a possible bed and breakfast, as an inn convenient to Roanoke College and the Salem Civic Center. "I remember laughing like a turtle on his back," Phyllis said, but owning a business like that has "always been a dream of mine...it's been at the back of my mind".

With plenty of experience and love for redoing old houses, the two signed the house up at the end of 2006 for the Historical Home Tour on December 9, 2007. After revamping the entire house, creating larger entranceways, a bathroom for each bedroom, and much more, the old college rental is now a homey, yet sophisticated Tuscan-country style three room inn.

Unlike some "stuffy" bed and breakfasts, guests are welcome to use the common rooms at their convenience, the kitchen isn't off limits, and guests staying longer can use the laundry facilities. With a homemade breakfast every morning, which is usual at a flexible time, Phyllis Brugh brings what's usually an out of town comfort to Salem.

Kite Festival is Saturday at Green Hill Park

kitefest081.jpg

The Richmond Air Force Kite Club returns to Salem with aerial shows and kite builders, with the Salem-Roanoke Chamber of Commerce offering free kites and t-shirts to the first 1,200 kids. Admission is free for everyone.

The show runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, with vendors from the area and beyond, kids activities such as a maze by Timbertruss Housing Systems, and much more. The Roanoke Times will have a paparazzi photo opportunity -- have your picture taken by a professional photographer.

Here are directions to Green Hill Park and pictures of last year's kite festival

The park “lends itself so beautifully to the kite festival,” chamber director Debbie Kavitz said, also adding that “the mountains become a backdrop to the kite displays.” According to Kavitz, a wind tunnel runs right through the park via the nearby mountains, allowing an event which would normally take place closer to a beach or earlier in the season to happen on every third week in April in Salem.

“How wonderful to realize at the ten year point that we’re expecting 9,500 to 10,000 people!” Kavitz said. “I think [the first year] they allocated $1,500 and bough a few kites with a drink cart…and it just grew and grew.”
