Your online guide to the July 24 issue of So Salem

Swing time!

Things were swinging both on stage — and off stage — at Jazz in July last weekend in Longwood Park.

We have a page full of photos in this week’s print edition of So Salem but, gosh, we took a lot more than that, so we’re sharing the entire gallery online. (By the way, that’s Adam Gordon of Salem on the swings there.)

Those aren’t the only online extras we have for you this week, of course. Each day we post upwards of a dozen new items from Salem and western Roanoke County on this site, so if you want to think of us as Salem’s digital daily newspaper, feel free!

Anyway, here’s an easy guide to finding the other extras this week:

Langhorne Place celebrates the Fourth of July with a parade. Photo by Ed Sweeney

Now that’s the way to ride in a parade — comfortably.

This little parade participant might not remember this year’s Fourth of July festivities, but there will be pictures to look back on, thanks to Ed Sweeney, who shared photos with So Salem from Langhorne Place’s holiday gathering. You can find some of them on the neighbors page in this week’s edition, but as is often the case, they didn’t all fit.  So you can click here to see a few more in the online gallery, including the one at left.

And that’s not all that you can scroll around The Notebook to see. Here are more of this week’s online extras:
* More bird’s-eye views of the Salem Fair, and a follow-up on the fair’s numbers
* Salem Host Lions Club awards scholarships
* Salem Kiwanis members send a 4-H-er to camp
* Photos from Glenvar cheerleaders’ car wash

Your online guide to the July 10 issue of So Salem

Not all the rides at the Salem Fair spin and twirl and tilt and go ’round and ’round.

Some are camels.

Well, technically the camels go ’round and ’round, too, just, um, a lot slower than the Tilt-A-Whirl.

Barbara Krzysko of Salem sent us this photo from the Salem Fair — plus a bunch of others. In fact, we have so many photos from the Salem Fair, there’s no way we can fit them all in print.

Instead, they’re here online — right here in this gallery from Barbara and this one from Miranda Adkins.

Those are the only online extras we have for you this week. Here’s an easy way to find the rest:

* Jazz in July set for July 18 in Longwood Park
* Does Salem have best Chinese restaurant in the Roanoke Valley?
* Paparazzi photos of Salem people at Music for Americans
* More photos from the Nancy’s Candy Co. grand opening
* More surveillance photos from the July 2 bank robbery
* More surveillance photos – and the latest update on — the July 6 bank robbery.
* More photos from Freedom Blast
* More photos from the Adorable Pets contest

AND IN SPORTS . .
Salem girls play on softball team that wins North Carolina championship
* More photos of the Virginia Attack baseball team

* Podcast with Salem native Harry Turner, music manager

Your online guide to the June 26 issue of So Salem

We have so much coverage of Salem’s Relay for Life that we couldn’t fit it all into this week’s print edition.

Such as this photo of Judy LePrade (left) and Charlene Lester, on the Medeco Security Locks team.

That’s why each week we direct readers to come online for “more.” Every day we’re posting upwards of a dozen new items from Salem and western Roanoke County — we think of this as Salem’s digital daily newspaper. So here’s our guide to this week’s “online extras” — starting with our coverage of Relay for Life, about which we have seven different posts.

But we also have:

It’s graduation season.

In this week’s print edition of So Salem, you’ll find two pages of graduation photos from Salem High School — actually, three, if you count the cover.

You’ll find even more here online. In fact, we have not one, not two, not even three, but four photo galleries from graduation — from Erin Millar, Miranda Adkins, Barbara Krzysko and John Adkisson. That’s one of John’s at left, showing grads celebrating by tossing baby powder. (And we’d have even more if you wanted to share some of yours. We’re at news@sosalem.com)

Each week, of course, we find ourselves with far more photos than we could even hope to fit in print. So that’s why we often refer readers to come online to see more.

Your online guide to the June 12 issue of So Salem

It’s graduation season.

In this week’s print edition of So Salem, you’ll find two full pages of photos from Glenvar’s graduation this week. (By the way, that’s Rebecca Lane, Emily Mann and Phillip Wills in the photo at left.)

And where, you ask, are the Salem High School graduation photos? Well, um, they’re right here — online. Salem’s ceremony, alas, came too late to meet our deadlines for this week’s print edition. (More to the point, it came too late for us to meet the deadlines to get the papers to the post office for those of you who get your copies in the mail, which a big percentage of our readers do.)

Have no fear — we’ll have Salem graduation photos in print next week. But we like to say that we’re Salem’s daily digital newspaper, and so everything is here online. In fact, day we post upwards of a dozen news items from around Salem and western Roanoke County, far more than we could ever fit in print. So each week, we offer up this guide to our “online extras.”

This week, we’ll start with our online guide to Glenvar graduation photos – and Salem graduation photos. (And if you have graduation photos to share, please do at news@sosalem.com.)

Your online guide to the June 5 issue of So Salem

We publish the print version of So Salem once a week.

But gosh, how can a weekly newspaper keep up with how many times the pig outside Henry’s Memphis BBQ gets painted (and re-painted)?

Answer: Well, it can’t. So that’s why we have online.

Every day, we update this site with sometimes a dozen news items from around Salem and western Roanoke County — such as the photos that Penny Williams shared with us this week of how Glenvar’s softball team painted the pig Glenvar gold to celebrate its victory in the regionals.

We have one photo of that in this week’s print edition, but more online. And since state tournaments are going on this week, well, if the pig gets painted again, someone let us know — send us photos and we’ll share ‘em with you right here. (We’ve already seen the pig turn Glenvar green, then Salem maroon and now back to Glenvar green again — stay tuned!)

In the meantime, here are some of the other online extras we have for you this week:

* Photos from youth night at Salem Red Sox
* Military families can see Salem Red Sox free on June 14
* Salem spa gets a new owner
* More photos from Relay for Life
* More photos from the time capsule at Glenvar Elementary
* Read the full resolution commending William Sinkler
* More on Jacob Tyree named Highlander of Honor at Glenvar
* More on Cory Akers’ award from Johns Hopkins
* More on Chris Tucker running in the Boston Marathon
* More prom photos from Salem and Glenvar
* More photos of the squirrel at the Salem Civic Center
* More on the Cool Cities Coalition
* More on the Baseball 101 course at the Salem Red Sox

AND IN SPORTS . . . .

* Photos of Glenvar baseball in state tournament.
* Photos of Salem girls soccer in regionals (and state)
* More photos of the Salem Dirt Divas vs. the Glenvar Slammers
* More photos of the Salem Sabres vs. the Radford LadyCats and Valley AFC Mountain Cats
* More on what ESPN had to say about Ataijah Taylor

It’s tournament time for high school sports.

And we have lots of photos — far more than we could ever hope to fit into print.

Of course, we can’t fit everything into our print edition, not when we’re posting upwards of a dozen new items each day here online. So that’s why in each week’s edition we direct readers to come online for more.

This week, our online extras include more photos from the Glenvar Middle-Read Mountain soccer game.

And also:
