A bear sighted in Salem

We have another report of a bear sighting -- this one smack in Salem itself.

Sherri Parrish tells us: "My husband, 2 children, and I saw a bear yesterday in Salem, right where Franklin and Upland meet. We were leaving our house on Diamond Rd. going down Upland and Turned onto Franklin, when my 6 yr old daughter Maddie, hollered “mommy there’s a bear!” . It was running right next to the street. We were very surprised to see it because we are in the middle of a bunch of neighborhoods. It was very cool that my daughter got to see a bear that close up and not in the woods or zoo, but rather scary that it was in someone’s front yard in the middle of the city."

We've added Sherri's sighting to our map of bear sightings. This comes on the heels of several other bear sightings around Salem we've had lately.

On July 14, we posted an entire photo gallery of the bear that raided the bird feeder in Loyd Tingler's backyard off Wildwood Road.

Then on July 15, Jerry and Linda Watts sent us a photo of the bear that wandered into their backyard on Sagewood Circle off 311.

So have you seen a bear in or around Salem lately? If so, let us know at news@sosalem.com -- and if you have photos, send those on, too.

What are you doing this summer? Put yourself on our map!

Let us know what you're doing this summer and we can put you on our So Salem Summer '08 map. Just email us at news@sosalem.com -- and send us some photos, too.

Here are some of the folks we've already put on the map:

* Fred Campbell, who went to Europe

* Theresa Grey and her touring group of recent Salem High School alums: Elizabeth McArthur, LeAnna Minnix, Amy McArthur, Krysti Nelson, Sarah Hall.Nitya Reddy, Millie Leach, Nick Leftwich, Tristan MacDonald, and David Crotts.

* Elizabeth McArthur sent in some photos from the same tour.

* Allan Fausnacht, Katherine Hoffman and J.R. Shelor.

* Darrell and Donna Barr

Another bear sighting outside Salem

salem_bearwatts.jpg

We have bear sightings coming out of the woodwork. Or maybe just bears coming out of the woods. Yesterday, we posted a photo gallery from Loyd Tingler, showing a bear waddling into his backyard on Wildwood Road and raiding a bird feeder. Today, we get this photo from Jerry and Linda Watts, who tell us:

"About 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 3, 2008, this big bear walked into our yard. We've lived here for 17 years...and this is the first bear we've seen. He was "well-behaved"--sniffed around curiously for about 10 minutes...and then walked back into the woods. We live on Sagewood Circle in Roanoke County (off Rt. 311 near Salem)."

So have you seen a bear lately? If so, send us the information (and a photo if you have it) and we can add it to our map of bear sightings.

Of course, if you have news or photos from anywhere around Salem and western Roanoke County, you can send it to news@sosalem.com -- whether it has a bear in it or not.

Photos of bear raiding bird feeder off Wildwood Road

DSC_0094_editedSMALL.jpg

Loyd Tingler sends us some spectacular photos of a bear in his back yard off Wildwood Road.

Loyd tells us: "These pictures were captured at 10:54 pm on June 19, 2008 in Salem off Wildwood Road at I-81 exit 137 -- at bird feeders approximately 15-20 feet from a kitchen window. In the picture showing it on all four feet, the feeder post to its right measures 4 ft. 2 in. from the ground to the bottom of the baffle. We're guessing its height to be about 3 ft. In the pictures on its hind legs, the feeder post measures 6 ft. 7 in. from the ground to the bottom of the baffle. We're guessing its nose to be about 6 ft. 3 in. in the air. Could it possibly weigh between 200 and 300 pounds?"

We've put all six of Loyd's photos into this photo gallery.

Have you seen a bear lately? If so, our data delivery editor, Matt Chittum, wants to know. Not all data is cold, heartless numbers. Some of it's warm and fuzzy, like our map of unusual bear sightings.

And if you have interesting photos from Salem and western Roanoke County, you can share them at news@sosalem.com -- whether they have bears in them or not.

How does your garden grow? Send us pictures!

Over on the Fridge Magnet food blog, food writer Lindsey Nair has a report of the first ripe homegrown tomato of the season. Or is it? How's your garden going? All of which seems to a good time to say hey, if you have photos of your garden -- be it that first ripe tomato of the season or the potato shaped like Richard Nixon's nose -- we'd love to show 'em off to readers.

Just send your photos (and, of course, a brief description, if we can't tell whether it's a rutabaga or rock) to us at news@sosalem.com

Don't touch the cactus!

0620%20Salem%20Cactus111.jpg

Over at the Skyline Dry Cleaners and Laundromat on West Main, there's an interesting sign on the cactii: "Do not handle the plants". One might think it's a no-brainer, but apparently, a couple of the plants are top-heavy and can't be moved around.

A customer gave Sandy Dawley the cactus in 2002. Since then, it's grown quite a bit and has several off-shoots. Gravel in the bottom of the container as well as wire supports help to balance out the weight.

What are all the motorcycles for?

"Go Salem" found, with "Go 24153" to boot!

Salem Avalanche fans and stadium employees Jeanne Dillman, right, and Betty Parks, left, pose with their Salem vanity plates. Parks wrote in to us about her plates, and her son, Hunter, a sophomore at Roanoke College, knew exactly who had "Go Salem" -- his friend Bradford's mom, Jeanne!

The Bradfords and Dillmans have lived near one another since their sons were children, and they have worked for the Avalanche together since Betty joined seven years ago. Dillman has worked at the stadium since it opened in 1995.

Dillman's husband, pictured below, actually owns the "Go Salem" vehicle.

0523%20Go%20Salem%21211.jpg

We had other Salem-related license plates from Jill Sluss on May 9, and Becky Holt on May 9 and May 14. Do you have a Salem license plate? Send us a photo and let us know at news@sosalem.com.

Photos from our ice cream party at Lakeside Kroger

krogersalem.jpg

Thanks to all who came out Saturday and joined us for an ice cream party at the Lakeside Kroger -- such as Sara Bryant and Logan Bryant right here. We have more photos from the party in our gallery -- and we'll be running some of these in Friday's print edition of So Salem.

And if you see someone you know in the gallery, tell 'em about it!

An online guide to the May 16 print edition of So Salem

In the May 16 print edition of So Salem, we point readers to things online in several places. Now that you're here online, we'll make things even easier for you -- here are links to those particular items:

* Salem High School lacrosse mentioned on the Varsity Cast

* Salem High School After Prom photos

* Glenvar High School After Prom photos

* Salem senior Ben Critz wins scholarship

* Sports physicals offered for middle and high schoolers

* Photo gallery from the Duck Derby

Plus, we have two special shout-outs:

* A special invitation to graduating high school seniors

* Is someone in your family graduating from college this spring?

As always, if you have news or photos from Salem or western Roanoke County to share, we're just a click away at news@sosalem.com. We're especially looking for youth sports photos.

If you're like to meet our community journalist for Salem and western Roanoke County, Miranda Adkins, she keeps office hours weekly at Mill Mountain Coffee & Tea in downtown Salem. Here's her schedule.

And if you're looking for our print edition, here's where to find one.

This family has four Salem license plates

rickyreynoldssmall.jpg

Now this is Salem! You'll recall that Becky Holt had earlier sent us pictures of her Salem license plate, her husband's Salem license plate and her uncle's Salem license plate. If not, they're here.

At the time, she said she wanted to send a picture of her brother's Salem license plate, but she couldn't, because his car was in the shop.

Well, guess what? She and Ricky Reynolds went down to Clayton's Automotive -- and took the photo anyway. Here he is with "2 4Salem."

So do you have a Salem-related license plate? Send us a photo of you and the plate at news@sosalem.com, and we’ll add you to our collection.

Our original shout-out for Salem license plates began on April 21 with a search for whoever has the plate "Go Salem."

By the way, we're still looking for that one.

We also heard from Jill Sluss on May 9.

Another Salem license plate!

jillslusssmall.jpg

No sooner had we posted photos that Becky Holt sent us of her husband, her uncle and herself posing beside their Salem license plates than another person sporting Salem plates weighed in.

Jill Sluss tells us: "You asked for photos of Salem License Plates. Here is my vehicle with my 2 oldest children (my youngest is too little to be in the photo; 8 months)! The 2 children pictured are Levi and Braeden Sluss, both students at South Salem Elementary. We are huge fans of the Salem Spartans! My husband, Jeff, just happened to be "playing" on the DMV website one day and put "4 SALEM" in for fun. We were shocked that it was available!"

So, do you have a Salem-related license plate? If so, send us a picture of it (and you), at news@sosalem.com. For the Holt family's license plates we posted earlier, click here. And for our original shout-out, click here.

How Salem are you?

beckyreynoldsholtsmall.jpg

A few weeks ago we did a shout-out for people with Salem-related license plates. Becky Holt of Salem shouted back -- in triplicate.
Here she is with her “Salm-ite” license plate.
Below is her uncle, Frank Reynolds, with “1 4Salem” and her husband, Jimmy Holt, with “2 4Salm.”
Her brother, Ricky Reynolds, has “2 4Salem” -- but Becky says she can’t get a picture of his license plate just now. His car’s in the shop. When it's out, we'll hope to get a look at that one, too.
So do you have a Salem-related license plate? Send us a photo of you and the plate at news@sosalem.com, and we’ll add you to our collection.

By the way, we're still looking for whoever has the license plate "Go Salem."
