Salem, Roanoke County crime maps updated through June 29Posted Jul03, 2008 at 11:45 AM![]() We've just updated our Roanoke Valley crime map with the latest offenses from Salem and Roanoke County -- and Roanoke, as well. The data includes offenses through June 29. Normally we do this every week but this is a two-week update: In western Roanoke County the last two weeks, there was one burglary, one aggravated assault and one larceny. In Salem during that time, there were five burglaries, six larcenies and two aggravated assaults. Also, the Salem Police Department provides more detailed information than other localities -- so in addition to the Roanoke Valley crime map, we have a more detailed Salem crime map you can search, as well. Pedestrian injured, man charged with hit-and-runPosted Jul01, 2008 at 09:21 AMPolice arrested and charged a man with driving while intoxicated on Monday night, after a hit-and-run incident on Fort Lewis Church Road. The 21-year-old victim was transported to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke County police said early this morning. The victim's name and condition were not available. Somewhere between 10:20 and 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, May 29, Kate McIntyre’s heart malfunctioned. The 32-year-old mother of two, stepmother to two, and cupcake entrepreneur was riding her bike on Apperson Street into Salem. It’s believed that she was following the route she and her husband of five months, Tim, rode together just three days before. She was climbing the Colorado Street Bridge when she collapsed "like a rag doll." Unconscious and still clipped into her bike pedals, the amateur cyclist gasped for air. Several motorists stopped, including Al Wooldridge, Cheryl Staver, Stephen Hughes and three others. VDOT reports wide load has cleared the Roanoke ValleyPosted Jun18, 2008 at 09:25 AMThe Virginia Department of Transportation reports the wide load it warned about Tuesday has now passed through the Roanoke Valley, so Interstate 81 has returned to normal. The large steel structure for the Navy in Baltimore has now made its way to New Market. We had a previous post about possible closure of the interstate overnight on June 17. It's a steel structure for the Navy in Baltimore and is so large that the truck is traveling with a police escort. Pledge to wear seatbelt brings rewards for eight Salem studentsPosted May15, 2008 at 08:58 PM![]() Last month during two lunch periods, 387 Salem High students pledged to wear their seatbelts for an entire year as a gift to a friend or loved one. Eight of those students were randomly selected to win $50 or $100 cash prizes as a reward for their potentially life-saving promise. "You can't think about it when your car is sliding or someone is head-on toward you; you don't have time to buckle up," co-sponsor Sam Lionberger thanked them, citing two different accident victims, both family and family-friend, that would have survived if they had buckled up. You'll also see a change in our crime map. Previously, we had separate maps for Roanoke, Roanoke County and Salem. Now, you can see them all on one map -- so you can see crime patterns in the context of the entire Roanoke Valley. Plus, you can now search our database -- by locality, by street, by offense, or by date. Our data delivery editor, Matt Chittum, makes these maps happen as part of our Datasphere site of searchable data. Plus, Salem residents get an added benefit: The valley-wide map includes data for the most serious violent and property crimes for all three localities, but the Salem Police Department also provides details on all felonies in the city. So that we don't want to leave anything out, we've also got a Salem-only crime map that lists all felonies. It's also searchable now. Shred-It of Virginia will also be there to destroy Salem City residents' documents. It will take place at the Salem Transfer Station, 1300 Indiana Street. Here’s a list of accepted items. In western Roanoke County for this period, you'll find some larcenies, some burglaries, and even an aggravated assault. The Salem Police Department provides information on more crimes, so keep that in mind as you look at the two maps. That's why you'll find things such as an embezzlement and "evading -- failure to stop." To see how this compares with other localities, we also have a crime map for Roanoke. Both of those are the most recent dates available.
