Salem names all-star team to face Olympians July 24Posted Jun23, 2008 at 05:01 PMThe U.S. Olympic softball team is coming to Salem July 24 to play an exhibition before it heads to the Beijing games -- and today the Salem Parks and Recreation Department released the roster of regional all-stars who will suit up against the Olympians. This past Saturday, May 31, three Salem 4-H Riders competed in the 4-H Northwest District Qualifying show held at the Equestrian Center at Green Hill Park. Hannah Whitt, 14, left, won third in the Intermediate Hunter Rider Walk-Trot class, and sixth in the Intermediate Hunter Rider Walk-Trot-Canter class. Corey Hayes, 15, center, won second in the Model Hunter Horse Class. Participation in at least one class is required to qualify for the State 4-H show at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington September 18-21. The two, along with Lynsey Wyatt, 11, right, are members of the Salem 4-H Riders. The club meets once a week at Hopetree Family Services in Salem to provide riding lessons to Hopetree’s youth. Wanda Hayes and Shara Wyatt are the organizational leaders for the club. For more information about equestrian events in Southwest Virginia, click here. The night before the Suntrust Senior PBA Open, 114 amateurs and juniors had the chance to compete alongside some of the pros. The jitters that were evident as the second section of amateurs and juniors began to bowl with their pros disappeared as the first frame turned into the second. By the third go-round, each bowler descended into their own rhythm, and the alley seemed to be full of life-long friends. The women's team earned 27 points and placed fifth overall, with top-notch performances by Yerkes in the 200-meter dash and long jump, and Osborn's performance in the long jump. RC assistant coach Shelli Sayers was named the South/Southeast Region Assistant Coach of the year. Lee Hipp of Salem, at left, was the overall winner in the Roanoke Valley Senior Tour tournament held on May 13th at Countryside Golf Club. Hipp, playing in Division 1, had the low net score of 61. He also claimed the low gross score with a 69. Other net score winners in Division 1 were 2nd place Woody Deans with a 63; 3rd, 4th, and 5th were decided by matching score cards with Art Lawrence taking 3rd, Butch Church 4th, and Lynnis Vernon 5th, all with scores of 65.
