Sam Dean, 30, a photojournalist for nearly a decade, has covered stories as varied as the Elian Gonzalez saga and conflict in Afghanistan. He joined The Roanoke Times in 2000.

Josh Meltzer has worked for The Roanoke Times since 1999, when he moved to Virginia from Duluth, Minn., where he worked as a staff photographer for the Duluth News-Tribune for four years. Recently, he has photographed long-term projects on the Blue Ridge Parkway, consolidation of schools and portrait series of D-Day Veterans. Both Meltzer's daily work and long-term projects have been recognized with awards from the National Press Photographers' Association, the Virginia News Photographers' Association and the Virginia Press Association.
