Luring retailers to Roanoke

You may remember when Roanoke City last February launched a new Web site to entice retailers and solicit local feedback.

At www.myretailroanoke.com, you can vote for the stores or restaurants that you’d like to see land in the Roanoke Valley.

I’m working on a story to update this city effort and determine whether or not it is working to attract these coveted retailers. Right now, Kohl’s, IKEA and the Cheesecake Factory top the list.

I’m interested in your thoughts. If you have visited this Web site, tell us the retailers for which you voted and what you think of this effort and its chance for success.

Out of the top ten, I'd say Roanoke has a decent chance to land Chili's, Crate and Barrel, Pottery Barn, and Banana Republic.

My out of town faves are: J Jill, Chili's, Macaroni Grill, Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel, Trader Joe's, Banana Republic and J Crew. I am probably asking for too much, but I will happy as a clam for just a J Jill.

I would love to see Kohl's, Cheesecake Factory, Banana Republic, Costco, and a Super Target.

Hi, VaGuy, For what reason do you think Roanoke has a good chance of landing Chilli's, Crate and Barrel, Pottery Barn and Banana Republic? What do you think it would take for that to happen?

Ditto Jeff... those stores would catapult Roanoke's retail scene into the legitimate shopping hub for this entire area. I think all of those stores would do very well here too and, as larger metropolitan areas face an economic downturn, the stores should consider Roanoke a prime region for expansion.

I was just guessing which of the top ten I thought were possible in the next few years; I'm not really a big shopper so I don't know too much about the retail locations. After looking at which cities those chains are currently located in, I would say that Chili's, Pottery Barn, and Banana Republic are realistic. Crate and Barrel is not located any similarly sized cities. It's very surprising there's no Chili's yet.

I did vote on the website and tried to get several of my friends to vote on it as well. I can not remember exactly which store I voted for but I am sure my list went something like this: Trader Joe's, DSW, Crate & Barrel, Banana Republic, Chipolte, Ann Taylor, Pottery Barn, IKEA, and Cheesecake Factory. I will be keeping my fingers crossed in hopes for just one of these stores ro arrive in Roanoke!

VaGuy, I agree, it's surprising that Chili's has not yet come to the Roanoke area. The closest one is in Staunton, Va., which is where I grew up. The only explanation that I have for Chili's landing there is that its location is near Interstate 81, which would help it to draw significant business.
