Save-A-Lot will debut on Thursday

save%20a%20lot%20sign.jpg

Look for the new Save-A-Lot on Melrose Avenue in Roanoke to open Thursday, which is day later than it expected. The new grocer was supposed to open today, but it was without power earlier this week because of the windstorm that hit the area. The store had to postpone a delivery of produce and meat and pack its frozen foods in dry ice.

If you stop by the store in the next few days, let me know what you think of it.

We went there today. Really just went to look, but (my wife) ended up buying a few things. It really looked a lot like the "warehouse" grocery stores that were popular for a short while some years back. Whole pallets of an item, still in the case, but w/ the front of the case cut away. And the HUGE majority of items were "off brand," or store brand. Actually I saw very few "name brand" items, mostly store brand. The prices seemed pretty good, but I don't really know prices that well on most things. The store was clean and well stocked, and the people friendly, so I came out w/ a positive image of the place.

The store was very busy, yet very clean. It is obvious that the store is part of a well run chain. Prices are cheaper than others, Boca Burgers $1.99 compared to over $3.00 elsewhere. As the last reader noted most of the items are the generic brand that Sav A Lot is known for. Being part of such a huge grocery umbrella, they are part of the Super Valu conglomerate, allows them to offer such deep discounts. Also, all items come with a 100% satisfaction guarnetee. I believe that you will see many different items rotated in and out (such as Big Lots)if I am not mistaken.

Greg and Dennis, Thanks for commenting on your Save-A-Lot experiences. You both mentioned that prices there are low. How do you think Save-A-Lot's prices compare to Wal-Mart's grocery prices?

Hi Jenny, I'd have to go back and look again and try to compare. Most of what I buy at Wal-Mart are national brands, not the generic brands. And I can't say that I really have that many of the prices in my head. I did notice one national brand item that was very cheap, but not sure if that was a sale price or not. If/when I go back I'll try to remember some prices so I can compare.

Jenny- I forgot to mention that this new store also had Peter Pan Peanut Butter for a $1.00 when I was there. You can't beat that anywhere. If anyone knows grocery prices I guess it would be me, considering that I am in the business...and from what I deemed, Sav a lot believe it or not is cheaper than Walmart practically across the board. Another popular item I noted was the Beech-Nut Baby Foods...again cheaper than Walmart and elsewhere. I hope this helps!

Greg, Thanks for the details about the Peter Pan peanut butter for $1 and the Beech-Nut baby foods. Those sound like good deals. It looks like Save-A-Lot will rival Wal-Mart for low prices.

I have now shopped at the Save-A-Lot grocery store about four times now and I really like it. I am mom to a large family with a limited grocery budget and buying store or generic brands is nothing new to me. I think the prices are cheaper than WalMart, at least on the items I buy. I highly recommend the Save-A-Lot store to anyone who needs to save money on groceries and doesn't mind not buying the name brands. The store is clean and bright, the employees friendly and helpful, couldn't ask for better.
