This weekend may cost ya

If you’re like me, you’re already thinking of how you will spend the long Memorial Day weekend, whether it’s hanging out in Southwest Virginia or heading out of town. But no matter what you’re doing, it’s probably going to cost you more than last year.

Not to put a negative spin on what is supposed to be a sunny weekend, weather-wise, but prices are rising for basically everything and that will impact all of us, one way or the other.

Here’s what I’m talking about:

--According to AAA Mid-Atlantic, fewer Virginians will travel this Memorial Day weekend. The total travelers will decline by about three percent, and it’s because of fuel costs and other economic challenges. In Roanoke, prices were $3.69 per gallon of regular unleaded gasoline as of Wednesday, a substantial jump from $3.02 last year.

--It will cost extra to check baggage onto American Airline flights. Check out this story about the airline’s plan to charge $15 for each checked bag because of higher fuel prices. That’s in addition to your airline ticket. Ouch!

--If you plan to grill out, watch your budget. Increasing prices for meats, such as hamburger and hot dogs, will force you to shell out extra bucks. Read this story about how outdoor cooking is becoming more expensive this summer.

How do you expect higher costs to impact your plans this holiday weekend or this summer in general?

Well, our plans are to just do things local. We like to do geocaching, its a fun way to get out and you can do it within any area you live. All you need is a GPS unit.

We have plans for Florida at the end of August. That could change.

I drove past Sheetz this morning in Fairlawn and their prices jumped 20 cents per gallon from 1130PM Tuesday to 9AM this morning....to $3.85 a gallon for regular. Our plans for this weekend are to finish some landscaping work on our house, grill some homemade burgers and other food, and generally stay at home. For our vacation, we're staying in state, within 2 hours of here...at a place that will cost us just $40 plus food and gas for a whole week. We had thought of going to Wilmington, NC...but the total cost would just be too high at this point.

We're staying local this year and grilling ribs instead of hamburgers and hot dogs. Exciting! Also, I noticed yesterday Lowes has a ton of grills for sale that are already assembled and ready to take home.

Many of my friends are headed out of town this weekend, but I have decided to enjoy a long hike and get away from the craziness that has plagued our society and enjoy what nature has given us...Heading to Corolla, NC for a week in July, but that is all paid for besides the gas...

Go Hoos!!

It appears that staying close to home is the trend this Memorial Day weekend. Other John, your week-long vacation sounds like a steal! Where will you be vacationing? And it sounds like many of you are buying up meats to grill, despite high prices. Michelle, are prices for ribs about the same as hamburgers?

I stayed close to home and will do it again for the 4th. I just can't afford the gas. About the only time I drive my truck is when I need to use it. My vacation was in May and I went camping. It takes over $100 to fill it up. So I went to Roanoke Mountain campground. Lots of other people had the same idea as I've been going there for atleast 12 years and have never seen it that packed. This is one reason hope they never close it was in a recent article. Now I wish I had gone further away and stayed close to home on my next vacation in July as gas prices are worse nearing $4. I understand that we have been getting off cheap for a long time compared to other country's but how does their dollar stack up to ours I ask. And they can't expect use to take the increase as fast as it has gone up. They can make all the excuses the want for the price of oil going up like it has. They like the supply and demand one the best. But why are they making record profits and we are paying record prices. There is no other product out there that this is allowed to happen. I know we don't help things when you have people that just have to drive something like a Hummer. There is no need for one other than a statues symbol. And people need to rethink their driving habits. I see the biggest gas hogs take off like a rocket when the light turns green. Even at $4 a gallon. You take off like normal then the next light turns red and you pull right up with them. they got no where fast. ok that enough ranting. Sorry to get a bit off topic Jenny.
