Counting calories

Will you stop eating certain foods when the calorie information becomes public knowledge? You may have read stories last week about Yum Brands' plans to post calorie information about the foods served at its restaurants. They are Kentucky Fried Chicken, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, A&W All- American Food and Long John Silver’s.

Also, Hardee’s recently introduced its little thickburger, which is an alternative to the high- calorie thickburger. At 1/4 pounds, the little version is smaller than the regular 1/3 pound thickburger. The little thickburger also is cheaper, starting at $1.99, though prices vary at different locations.

Most fast food places already publish nutrition data online and/or in pamphlets in the restaurant. I don't see this changing my habits much, although you never know how you'll react until it's actually staring you in the face.

Isn't some of this already available? You can buy those little books that tell you the nutritional value, or lack thereof, for chain restaurants. I know I've seen carb ones anyway.

I doubt that it will change most people's habits. I don't know the calories, but I do know it's high. You'd think with all the bad publicity that they've gotten, for example the supersize me please movie, that people would already know it's high.

We do go to fast food chains every once in a while, but we try to do so sparingly. It's harder to walk away now though with a toddler who yells for 'Donald's' everytime she sees the arches.

Following Dana's comment about her toddler & the "golden arches", I've noticed the most recently designed McDonald's make the "golden arches" much less prominent than in years gone by.

Just my opinion, but I believe that will ultimately hurt their business. (Less emphasis on the "golden arches")

I think if you're eating at any of these places you should already know you are going to be eating something really high in fat/calories/sodium, unless you get a salad or a wrap.

And even then, if you smother the salad or wrap with dressing you are getting just as much as fat and calories as the burgers.

I try to eat healthy but like anyone else I occasionally get the urge for some nasty fast food.

Livestrong.com has a really good calorie counter for almost anything you can eat.

I thought there was a law requiring the info be posted, including fat grams. It is almost impossible to get the information on Quiznos. There are even web sites about how secretive Quiznos is about their sandwichescalories and fat content. (They sure are good anyway)

Steve, I don't know about the arch theory at least where kids are concerned. We went to Charleston, SC two weeks ago. We were walking around a block and looking at some of the houses. All of a sudden my toddler, who turned two in June, started saying 'Donald's, Donald's'. There was no McDonald's anywhere near the area so it took me a few minutes to figure out what she was talking about. Then I spotted it. There was a yellow house and above the chimney they had decorative concrete arches that looked like an M. I got a kick out of it. It's kind of amazing though since we don't go to McDonald's all that much.
